Wake Island to be claimed as U S Pacific station
Wake Island, about 2 000 miles from Johnston and 1 800 miles from Guam, is to be taken by the Bennington under Captain Taussig for a Pacific cable station. The island is three miles long with a saltwater lagoon and eight feet above high tide, needing a condenser to supply fresh water. Despite harsh terrain it is described as American territory since 1851 when Wilkes asserted title.

North Dakota rate case decided for railroads by judge Amidon
In Farno North Dakota on December 24 Judge Amidon ruled in favor of the railroads after months of expert testimony and a substantial cost. Judge Thayer joined the decision. Rates were challenged under a new tariff but an injunction had halted enforcement. A special master was appointed to take testimony, with broad support from railroads and legal authorities. The decision held capital deserves proper remuneration and North Dakota failed to prove rates harmed profits.
