Should Atlantic buy the water works now or foreclose bonds

The Atlantic council weighs whether to foreclose the Water Co bonds or have the city own and operate its water plant. The piece recounts 1880 fire, the 1883 waterworks start, a 25 year franchise, and a 1990s lease with 6 percent interest. If foreclosed, stockholders lose. city ownership could save fire protection costs and keep water prices lower, but legal hurdles delay funding and a meeting is set for 7:30 PM at Firemen's Hall.

Wilco men plan trip to join Manila battalion

Wilco to Manila, Tia Day and Robert McDowell of the Fifty first Iowa Volunteers, home on furlough, traveled to Des Moines to arrange transport for the Scandia to sail from San Francisco for the Philippines between the 20th and 30th. Day belongs to Company M and McDowell to Company E. The platoon notes other regiments claim the youngest recruit, with Texas reporting the youngest so far. Thomas Hollowell of Company M, Iowa List, brother of L. S., is not yet 17 and has not missed a drill aside from a facial boil. He and Henry Hoffman helped win a cup at Camp Merriam for best drilled company. Hoffman has never missed a drill since enlistment. The Supreme Court affirmed Judge Macy’s eight year sentence for Frank Sherman for the crime of rape, a case from Anita that had been appealed from Cass County.
