Good roads debate and farmer tax ideas in Iowa letter

Mrs Grahem and Mrs Por Entertain Large Social Event

Mrs W F Grahem and Mrs F W Por hosted a large afternoon affair at 605 Maple Street. The event drew about 150 invitations with staggered visiting hours and a steady stream of guests. Tea and wafers were served after guests were greeted by the hostesses.

Jennie O Conner of Griswold was an overnight visitor here yesterday. J W McClain of Extra was in the city last night and this morning. Fremont Benjamin of Avoca visited friends over last night. Charles A Higgins of Griswold was in town on professional business today. Mrs E G Simpson and Miss Simpson of Maine were shopping. Roscoe Barton and A L Preston of Avoca were here on business over last night. D C Weaver and A Abham Jr of Lyman visited here over. Peter Hopley returned from Chicago this morning where he had been with cattle. H Stevenson of Griswold and C E Longstreet of Elliott were in the city yesterday and last night. J A Campbell & Son of the Atlantic Roller Mills issued an elaborate calendar for the new year. It is the most handsome we have seen. J B Coate returned from a extended business trip to New Mexico and other western points where he has mining interests. Mr and Mrs Goodwin returned to Davenport this morning after nearly nine months with their daughter Mrs E W Scott and relatives in this vicinity. Mrs John Kineman of Leadville Colo is visiting relatives here. Her home was formerly in Des Moines then Los Angeles and Denver before Leadville. The Griswold Mills, sold to satisfy a mortgage a year ago, will likely fall to the mortgagee next week for sale at a bargain. The property paid on the mortgage until the National bank failure in Griswold. C C Smith of Meashant township and F M Nichols of this city are interested. Nichols held the mortgage and Smith acted as endorser for several hundred dollars. It is claimed the mill will pay well under proper management.

Atlantic Association meeting attendance signals scarce interest

The Atlantic Commercial Association met in Fireman's hall last night with fewer than a dozen members present. No business was transacted as attendance was too low, though topics discussed included a possible new railroad line, paving Chestnut street, a sewer system, and a Bull Creek sewer main. Membership efforts showed fifty nine names collected, with Chestnut street still largely unvisited.
