Impeachment Tales Cloud Nebraska Legislature
In Lixconn the legislature met in joint session to consider impeachment resolutions against ex-Auditor T. H. Benton and ex-Attorney General William Leese. The Benton charge advanced, Leese’s was stalled as a three member committee was appointed to take evidence. Chief Justice Maxwell was notified to convene next week. House passed eight bills, including the Omaha charter, while one major measure on carbonic gas safety valves failed by three votes. The scene shifted to Sarr Laks where Mormon temple dedication drew up to 100,000 visitors and prayers for unity across party lines were offered. Other items note horse losses in Warsaw, counterfeiters captured in Sacramento, a Minnesota pensions site chosen, a $12,000 burglary in Madison, and a furniture makers’ national group formation. The weather bureau probe also continued.
