In Avon Iowa on April 8 Charles W Crawford pleaded guilty to three indictments in the Adel State bank raid and received a 22 year sentence. A sheriff and county clerk transported the prisoner to Fort Madison. The Des Moines population estimate and other regional notes are listed alongside.
A Sunday mid day tragedy on Lincoln Street in Wichita Kansas ended with Walter Scott shooting his wife as the congregation left the Lincoln Street Christian church. After shooting she collapsed at his feet and he then turned the pistol on himself, dying within reach of his wife. Both bodies were removed to an undertaker. She was 17 and he had married her about two years ago. they had separated about a year earlier.
In a Gleason hotel lobby a confrontation over bribery charges tied to a railroad commission bill led to Governor Clarke spitting at Representative Jones. The governor drew a revolver, bystanders disarmed him, and Clarke was arrested on assault charges while Jones described the tense moment. Other lawmakers helped restrain the pistol as the scene shifted to Jones’s room. Clarke said he did not intend trouble and would plead guilty to assault. A separate note reports John A.
