In White Plains dated June 25, Evelyn Thaw testifies that Harry Thaw threatened to shoot his wife. The testimony is part of Thaw’s effort to prove insanity and gain release from Matteawan asylum. She denies being coached by Austin Flint and confirms discussing Thaw’s threat to shoot her.

Sulzberger Lease of Fort Dodge Plant

Sulzberger & Sons lease the Corn Belt Packing plant at Fort Dodge for one year with option to buy. Lease price is 5000 dollars. purchase option 75000 dollars. Operation starts July 1 with 3000 hogs weekly in summer and winter, then expansion to a half million dollar facility employing 290 to 100 workers. Corn Belt Packing shut down last April after only one year, hampered by finances and two fires.

Desertions Rise In Madison Provisional Regiment

In Madison on June 24 two hundred soldiers deserted the provisional regiment since the trial march from Dubuque. Twenty five deserters were brought into Camp Randall in irons. others fled to Fort Sheridan Fort Snelling and Sparta to avoid marching 200 miles on foot. A $50 reward is offered for captures. Six men were later returned from Sparta and all deserters were fined and jailed. The column resumed the march to Sparta.
