Nine year old Harry Baldwin son of Mr and Mrs W J Baldwin living at the Ogden Hotel fell beneath a Northwestern freight train in the yards while attempting to ride and was crushed to death. A switchman warned him off but he persisted in his action. Eatmore bread for sale at OConnor s bakery.
G Fisher opens a soft drink emporium at Avoca and will manage the business himself while continuing to reside in town. The venture marks his return to local commerce and aims to serve residents with beverages from a new shop in Avoca.
About twenty horses are in training at the fair grounds and, when the weather is fine, the track is busy. Most of these horses will be entered in races here this fall.
J Be Lepper, a Cumberland mail hack driver, faced a perilous morning as Turkey Creek flooded the lane, water surging into the vehicle and forcing the horses to swim. He freed the team, saved most mail, and canceled the trip to regain his breath after the near drowning encounter.
In heavy rain Sunday night a raging torrent overwhelmed the vicinity. Postmaster Blake donned boots and ventured out this morning to hunt for a missing mall. Citizens advised using Non Bip Typewriter paper for carbon copies and suggested tic at the News Telegraph.
