West Liberty post office burglar confesses boy thief
Davenport Iowa December 31 Russell Bockentine thirteen confessed to systematic break ins at the West Liberty post office registry department over weeks stealing cash. He was caught in the act by Marshal Wiley who had suspected the lad. A year earlier he confessed to robbing an express office at West Liberty and taking money from boys at school. Also in Waterloo a fifteen year old girl Frances Hilton died from severe kerosene burns after pouring fuel on a coal fire and attempting to extinguish flames. her mother and sister Myrtle were seriously burned. B. F. Montgomery, formerly a Council Bluffs figure, died in Denver after election as Colorado lieutenant governor. An Orange City man, W. A. Mullenberg, died in LeMars after a crash with a Northwestern train.

Des Moines on December 31 reports the German-American Insurance company of New York has taken over the Capital and Merchants and Bankers Fire Insurance company of Des Moines. After January 3 the Des Moines firm will operate as the Capital and Merchants and Bankers department of the German-American Insurance company of New York. C. E. Campbell, former secretary of the Capital, will serve as Iowa manager under the new arrangement. Des Moines agents will join the Iowa department of the New York company.
