Harry Pigsley, an employee at the White Pole garage, nearly died from gasoline and burning oil fumes found in a poorly ventilated workroom. Dr. C. E. Thompson arrived at 6:30 am, risking a lengthy resuscitation to save him. The incident prompted a caution about ventilation.
Charles Dunn owner of the Occidental hotel won the first prize of a $5 savings account in Farmers Savings bank penny guessing contest. 2655 pennies in the pile. Dunn guessed 2626. About 300 people registered guesses and nine runners up shared $1 savings accounts.

Instructions to take treasury certificates in payment of income and profits taxes were issued to Collector Louis Murphy in Dubuque. Certificates dated August 26 1918 maturing July 15 1919 and Series T dated November 7 1918 maturing March 15 1919 at par without interest will be accepted, with accrued interest paid separately by the Federal Reserve Bank upon deposit of the certificates. Interim certificates from Federal Reserve Banks will also be accepted in payment of taxes.

Dubuque Dec 30 The Mississippi river was filled with floating ice last week for the first time this year. The river remains open and ice cakes form along the shores in slowly moving patches. Several days of zero weather are required to close the channel, while the unusually low water limits potential shore damage.
Washington Dec 30 Representative Dowell held another conference with War Department officials on making Camp Dodge a permanent establishment. He was informed that reports in Des Moines misstate the department’s plan and that there is no intention to close Camp Dodge or replace it with Camp Grant.

J W Dauma, 35, pastor of the Methodist Episcopal church in Primghar Iowa, died by drinking wood alcohol and hanging himself from a bedpost. His body was found by the church janitor. A note to the district superintendent said he could not stand it any longer but gave no precise cause. He had come from Rock Valley Iowa a few months ago and was single.
New York reports that a flying mail system will link New York and Chicago inaugurating a new era in U S transportation. Chicago is expected to become a hub with routes radiating to Milwaukee Minneapolis St Paul Omaha Denver Cheyenne Salt Lake City and San Francisco linking finally with San Antonio and Laredo and with Mexican mails.
