Des Moines reports from the Iowa weather and crop service say some early corn is safe from frost, but most will need ten to fourteen days of warm weather to be out of danger. Some early fields show corn cutting may spread statewide in the next two weeks. pastures and winter grain seeding rise with recent rains, while late potato crop remains discouraging.

Explosion wrecks homes at Nauvoo fire destroys store
In Keokuk Virginia Sept 143 the Richtman General Store in Nauvoo Ill across the river caught fire then a massive explosion wrecked the building and two adjacent homes. The 4 year old daughter of Albert Ketchum died under collapsing walls while Edward Tachroth’s home and 25 nearby windows were destroyed. Ten cases of dynamite in the store’s water closet did not explode.

Fireman on Pilot Saves Boy on Moving Train
Fireman M. J. Chilson stepped onto the running board of an Omaha railroad engine and pulled a boy from the Floyd river bridge as the train rode at about 25 miles per hour. The engineer’s brakes failed and the fireman’s quick action prevented a disaster. A Carnegie medal may be sought for Chilson.

Forest Rangers Fight Fires in California
