In Webrum Pennsylvania June 24 an underground explosion at Lackawanna Coal and Coke Company trapped 160 miners. Few escaped to surface as bodies were recovered, many severely burned, rescue hampered by smoke and chaos. Officials warned the death toll could be high while rescue efforts continued.
London dispatch notes New York lawyer Myron H. Phelps, a figure in Indian house agitation against British rule, ordered to quit the Waldorf. The Daily Express editorial urges Lord Morley to curb his planned India tour amid Phelps’ denounced sedition. Phelps replies repudiating anti-British aims. Also report: five hurt in Toledo auto crash after collision with a freight train near Bradner, Ohio.
Madison Wis June 4 In his commencement address at the University of Wisconsin President Charles R Van Hise urged a shift from individualism to collectivism for the race The talk linked remedial laws and education to a broader social movement Bloomington Ind June 24 At Indiana Universitys eightieth commencement 289 diplomas were awarded with 63 advanced degrees including doctors of philosophy President David Starr Jordan formerly of Lehigh Stanford delivered the principal address and the doctor of laws was conferred on him.
In Fort Worth on June 24 a lone bandit robbed Wagoner Bank and Trust cashier Walter King of large cash, estimated at thirty eight thousand one hundred four dollars, then fled in a suspected automobile as posses scour the country seeking the well dressed assailant. The cashier was alone and was threatened with a revolver during the hold up.
In Fairmont West Virginia a woman and her husband were found naked and in a bathtub. The husband revived en route to the morgue while doctors said the wife had been dead at least thirty six hours. Authorities continue to investigate the suspected double tragedy.
Chung Sing, Ling's room-mate, tells police through a lengthy interrogation of how Elsie Sigel was killed. He describes peering through a door keyhole, seeing Elsie bound and Leon with a handkerchief over her mouth, then moving the trunk and hiding the evidence as detectives pressed for truth. Authorities say no arrest has been made and Ling remains at large while a separate report claims no Ling arrest in Johnstown.
William Reed Puyear, assistant electrical engineer at Ohio State University, shot and killed his brother-in-law Fred West and fatally wounded his wife. He fled to an attic as police pursued him and then shot himself, dying from the self-inflicted wound.
In Redwing Minnesota Judge W C Williston aged 79 collapsed while speaking at an old settlers reunion in Goodhue and died. He had served as judge in Redwing and was delivering the address when the fatal event occurred.
Senate votes on lumber schedule amid tariff debates as lawmakers press toward final action on the tariff bill. McCumber's amendment on lumber rates fails and digs into duty changes while a White House conference approves a plan taxing corporate net earnings at two percent for profit industries.
Grass Valley California reports a severe quake with a second tremor at 11 49 p m affecting Marysville Nevada City Chico and Golfax. No damage is reported. Reno New Mexico notes the quake as one of the heaviest here but caused no harm. The region had been viewed as outside the earthquake zone with no serious events in recent years.
Sperry Ja June 24 reports the disappearance mystery of Mrs Elizabeth Farrier wealth cleared by removing a carpet revealing bank notes on the floor. Nearly a thousand dollars found plus other sums in an old organ walls and out of way places. Administrators continue to search and find money as Mrs Farrier did not believe in banks.
Six armed men believed from Victor Colo seized Caretaker Arthur of the Colorado Springs water system and opened flood gates at Pike's Peak. They dumped 174000000 gallons into the Victor reservoir, keeping Arthur captive until he escaped and telephoned for help. Sheriff Burdsall led a posse of ten armed men and deputies toward the scene.
Paxton jurors found Private Joseph B. Klein not guilty of murdering Earl Nelson a Kankakee boy last August while First Regiment moved to Springfield riots. verdict came after twenty minutes. Nelson died from injuries after Klein as ammunition car guard ejected him.
Two hundred delegates attended the fourth annual meeting of the Town Retail Jewelers association in Des Moines. Members broadly favor the Payne tariff bill provisions requiring stamps on Swiss watches and tighter import controls to protect American consumers, with watch manufacturers supporting the measure.
A heavy wind storm swept Adel and Boone causing crop and pole damage while Fort Dodge and Des Moines reported severe weather including rain hail and lightning. A 17 year old Des Moines boy was seriously injured by a toy cannon explosive in an incident feared to be fatal.
