The steam er W. P. Thew, owned by Hugh R Havey of Detroit, sank off Thunder Bay Island after a collision with the steamer Livingstone in dense fog. Eleven crew members escaped in yawls and were rescued by the Mary C. Elphicke. The Thew, 182 feet long, was unladen and upbound toward Alpena, going down in heavy seas three miles west of the watch house.
