Houck Benefit Fund Origin and Growth in U C G T Iowa
During a Grand Council meeting in Sioux City in 1901 a penny collection sparked the idea of a fund for worthy brothers and dependents. A. W. Weidel and others advanced the plan, leading to the Father Houck Home Fund established in Ottumwa in 1903. The fund, funded by penny collections and small donations, grew to about $1100 by 1909 and aims to provide a home for destitute members, with a controlled future growth strategy and a dedicated committee overseeing it.
