William Jennings Bryan’s Early Life and Political Rise
William Jennings Bryan was born March 19, 1860 in Salem Illinois to Silas Lillard Bryan and Maria Elizabeth Jennings Bryan. He pursued law in Illinois and after practice in Jacksonville moved to Lincoln Nebraska where he joined the firm Talbot Bryan. His political ascent began in 1888 as a delegate to the Democratic state convention and he later served in Congress from 1891 to 1895 and again after 1896 as a leading advocate of tariff reform and free silver. He gained national prominence through influential speeches, ran for president in 1896 and 1900, and remained active in journalism and literature with The Commoner and several books.
