Francis Cushman representative from Tacoma passed away in Roosevelt hospital of pneumonia. At his bedside were Senator Samuel H. Piles and Andrew S. Burleigh. Cushman, longtime humorist in the House, helped shape debate on the Payne tariff bill, using wit to press views. He had served over ten years, held a varied career from water boy to lawyer, and will be sent to Washington for burial.

Woman Brutally Murdered in Italian Tenement Hall
The unknown woman's battered body was found in Ivast Thirteenth Street on a New York Italian tenement hall. Police arrested two men who are not believed to be the killer. Policeman Slain in Quarrel After July Celebration
Chicago July 7 A Cottage Grove police officer James Dozier was shot and killed after a belated Fourth of July celebration. His wife was wounded and Isaiah Holt, her brother, is named as the shooter who escaped before officers arrived at 2208 Dearborn Street. Dozier died en route to Provident Hospital. Several Dozier relatives and others are under arrest as the investigation continues.

New York July 7 The American Sugar Refining Company and several officers and directors entered not guilty pleas in the United States circuit court to indictments charging conspiracy restraint of trade and monopolizing raw and refined sugar Judge Hand accepted the pleas and gave two weeks for demurrer or other action.

Fire Wrecks Big Oil Plant in Indiana Storm
A lightning strike set a 35 000 gallon oil tank aflame at the Ohio Oil Company plant near Martinsville Indiana. Workers protected other tanks with earth and pumped off oil to prevent explosion as 650 men arrived on a Vandalia Railroad special to battle the blaze. Mrs Silver Speer Thomas, daughter of W A Speer, was granted a divorce in the superior court here after eloping with her chauffeur Russell J Thomas. Her parents pursued them, detained the bride, and spirited her to New York and then to Harape to avoid the pursuit. Russell J Thomas has sued his father in law for alienating his wife's affections.

Sleuths Slayer Executed in Auburn Electric Chair
Giuseppe Sanducci was executed in Auburn for the murder of Joseph Dorando, an Italian detective, at Belfast in Allegheny county on December 21, 1907. The killing occurred before 40 to 50 witnesses at a Belfast railroad station. Nine miners died in a Tollerville gas blast in Trinidad County, with all victims except one foreign.
