Washington July 6 The first big Taft victory came as the Senate passed the corporation tax amendment to the tariff bill 60 to 11 after a day of debate. Many Democrats joined Republicans for the change while only three Democrats opposed the final provision. The session also moved toward voting on a Brown resolution to submit an income tax amendment to the states.

Panic at Kresge Store Injures Dozens in Detroit Fire Cry
In Detroit on July 5 a false alarm of fire at Kresge's five and ten cent store caused a deadly crush. About 600 women and many children were crowded on the upper floors when a fight over an article sparked panic. Regatta At Burlington Mississippi River Opens
Under the Launch club of Burlington the largest motor boat regatta on the Mississippi began. Ten races range from one to thirty miles with prizes for each event. Fire devastates three-story boarding house in Seattle
A large three story frame building at 408 Terrace Street in Seattle was gutted along with two adjacent structures. Confesses Slaying Uncle Near Burton Farm

Flood at Bluff City Submerges 250 Acres in Heart of Council Bluffs
In Council Bluffs Iowa July 6 a severe flood inundated a 250 acre area in the city center as Indian creek overflowed after hours of heavy rain. Water reached three feet on Broadway from Seventh to Thirteenth, flooding stores and the streetcar system while rescuers saved three men from drowning and about 2,000 Independence Day celebrants were marooned at the Burlington depot before trains resumed service. No casualties were reported though damage is expected to be heavy.
