Fraudulent Certificate Notice From Covington Banker
A December 1865 notice from Newton County Georgia warns that a single Certificate of Deposit issued for a sum in dollars signed by J. W. Dease is to be renewed by the holder under law. It cautions against trading for the certificate and marks the date March 25, 1865, with location Covington Georgia and an April 1, 1865 posting.
Augusta Savannah Rebel Prices and Patchwork Patriotism
Augusta Savannah reports describe Confederate currency dominance and confiscation fears in Augusta. Citizens swap gold for greenbacks, face heavy fines and imprisonment, while exchanges show steep prices for meals, oysters, cigars, and transit as conflict forces relocations toward Union lines. A witness details Union sympathizers in Savannah celebrating, with accounts of emigrant collaborators and local editors shaping public opinion.
Federal flag of truce visits Selma over Adams request
Montgomery Mail reports an officer on a flag of truce went to Selma to obtain permission for Mrs General Adams to pass through Federal lines. She could not leave during evacuation. The escort returned, no crossing granted. Federals claim 2,50 prisoners from Plantersville and Selma and note heavy losses. Farmville lies west of Petersburg as Lee's army moves southwest.
