Chester S C Nov 22 Sentences in favor of eighteen plaintiffs were awarded against the Lancaster and Chester Railway for the Hoopers Creek wreck near the city on July 380. Several larger cases were continued. Awards ranged from 200 to 9,000 dollars to administrators and named individuals including W C Owen administrator W H Craft 7500 John M Jones 9000 J G Green 700 Samuel J Knox 3100 Hugh Hindman admin Elijah Heath 1800 and others.
Claudius Virnos and Carlos Pison of the Austrian steamer Boheme, en route from Rio de Janeiro to Mobile, were chained in irons aboard the ship for refusing duty and alleged theft of food and liquor. The Austrian Consul General in New Orleans will arrive in Mobile to hear testimony and determine punishment.
In Knoxville on November 22, the State Supreme Court reversed and remanded the murder case of Preston Jones, a Black man accused of killing a Knoxville policeman last June. The lower court had sentenced Jones to death after the judge urged the jury to return a first degree verdict or acquittal.
A nighttime riot on a Piedmont Avenue street car led to a pistol duel between H. K. Foster and Will Brown and a broader street fight involving about 100 riders and pedestrians. SAVANNAH Nov 22 Fleming Tinsley once a major cotton operator was acquitted of larceny after trust in the alleged misappropriation of 275 bales of sea island cotton by taking warehouse receipts covering them. The jury was out one hour.
CHATTANOOGA Nov 22 Judge McReynolds granted Hayes Brummitt a new trial for attempted larceny tied to buying a workhouse site. The court found he was not guilty on the count he was convicted of.
A fire in Durham North Carolina destroyed nearly a full city block when a defective flue in Joseph Bowens residence ignited the blaze. Damage was estimated at $10,000 and was checked by the Erwin Cotton Mills fire department.
