Forrest Ashworth, 23, seeks annulment after his 14 year old wife abducted from Georgia and kept in Tampa. The mother files fraud claim alleging elopement and lack of consent. Ashworth presents letters as proof of kidnapping. He declares intent to fight, acknowledging abrupt upheaval in a troubled marriage. Ashworth works for M. Rich & Bros. in Calhoun, Georgia.
New York dispatch reports Vincent Astor to marry Helen Dinsmore Huntington, daughter of Robert P. Huntington, adjoining Astor’s Dutchess County estate. The engagement ends his tenure as the nation’s wealthiest bachelor. fortune valued at about $65,000,000.
Governor Felker of New Hampshire orders Harry K. Thaw extradited to New York on conspiracy charges. The decision names Duchess County Sheriff Hornbeck to take Thaw to Matteawan. Thaw battles via habeas corpus while awaiting federal hearing likely in late November in Portsmouth.
President Wilson called a Senate caucus on the currency bill after a conference with officials. Senators Swanson O Gorman Reed and Hitchcock discussed the plan as Democrats signaled a fight could follow. The Currency Committee debated regional bank numbers with no final decision by day’s end.
WAYCROSS, Nov. 8. After an all day and night search, Little Dixie Collins, 3-year-old daughter of Mr. and Mrs. George Collins, who live ten miles west of Waycross, was found in the bottom of an old dry well. In running around the well Friday she fell in and her cries were not heard. The child slept in the well last night, according to her story, but did not like it. Her cries were heard by searchers today, who had about given up hope.
A trolley car ran off a half mile grade near Dream City, colliding with a corner grocery at Laketon and Montler streets. One man was killed and twenty passengers injured as the car plowed into the store, then tipped on its side and wrecked the building.
Andrew Carnegie presented to the Dumfermline Museum a set of items once owned by his father William Carnegie. The collection includes a Bible printed in 1791 and a pocketbook with manuscript notes on the weaving trade. The items were sent anonymously last summer and the sender’s identity has now been disclosed.
The body of American author Price Collier, who died suddenly at Vednesburg Castle on Funen Island, arrived in Copenhagen with Mrs. Collier and Warren D. Robbins. Robbins, third Secretary of the American Embassy at Paris, said Collier wished for cremation, and the family will proceed with it in Copenhagen.
New York November 8. An additional Harriman million heir was born early today to Mrs. Charles Carey Rumsey, daughter of E. H. Harriman. The child is a daughter and the second Rumsey offspring. Mr. and Mrs. Rumsey wed in May.
In New York a separation suit reveals Mrs Frederick W Behrenberg alleging her husband forced heavy brandy intakes, attempted to choke her, threatened her life, and claimed she deserved death when she refused to self harm. The testimony adds that she faced coercive abuse during their marriage.
Louisville dispatch reports L A Reed of Magoffin County drowned after his first steamboat ride when he leaned over a ferry rail and fell in the water. He waved good bye to his brother as he went down a third time.
In Montreal on November 8, the Dominion Coal Company's collier Bedgeport was reported lost with all hands. The vessel was due to arrive at the port today when the disaster occurred.
Waycross police report a shooting on a canal bridge as Melvin Williams fires twice at William Duggar, who was seen talking with Williams' wife. One bullet entered Duggar's mouth as Williams approached, firing without warning, leaving him fatally wounded or near death.
O W Lackey, 24, of 125 Central avenue, shot himself in the left breast with a .32 revolver in the dining room while his wife and two children watched. He was rushed to Grady Hospital, where doctors say he has serious injuries but is expected to recover. Mrs Lackey said he had been despondent over unemployment after leaving the Healey Building strike. He returned home to face rent due with no money or food, then fired, saying he intended to end it all.
Columbus Nov. — George W. Waddell former treasurer of the Home Savings Bank was indicted by the Muscogee County Grand Jury for a shortage exceeding \$13,000. It is said friends covered the loss with the Massachusetts Bonding Company. No arrest yet as Waddell reportedly left Columbus and may be in Atlanta.
Valdosta reports Chief Dampier closed an Oriential vaudeville attraction at the Georgia Florida fair after complaints. The tent bore “For Men Only” and was deemed particularly objectionable, kept open a day before suppression.
In Louisville Kentucky on November 8 General John B Castleman witnessed a ceremonial unveiling of a statue in his honor costing fifteen thousand dollars. The tribute was presented by admirers who chose to honor him before death. Castleman, a Civil War veteran, faced exile over Confederate affiliations but was later pardoned by President Grant.
In Cicero, Illinois, Justice of the Peace Joseph Zbetobsky was robbed of 2550 dollars and a 250 dollar watch when three bandits accosted him. A revolver was fired at his heart but the bullet struck his official badge and glanced off, saving his life. The incident occurred early today and highlights the badge’s protective role.
MOBILE November 8 Miss Mabelle Biggart evangelistic worker of London and New York will not be allowed to occupy the pulpit of the First Baptist Church in this city as the women of the congregation voted it down though the pastor Rev J W Phillips agreed.
Investigation of the American Can Corporation by the Department of Justice has been conducted and it is believed the report of Assistant Attorney General Chantland suggests suit under the Sherman Antitrust Law.
Miss Daisy Boger of Montgomery filed suit in Circuit Court against the Louisville and Nashville Railroad for being put off a passenger train at McGehee's Switch instead of Prattville. She says railroad employees misdirected her and she spent hours alone at the switch causing nervous shocks and illness. She seeks 2999 dollars.
W F Crawford a county employee who ran down and seriously injured L B Griffith a Southern Railway fireman will be tried on reckless driving. Crawford appeared at the police station and was bound over under 200 bond pending Griffiths injuries. Griffith remains in precarious condition at Grady Hospital where he was taken.
Durham readers report renewed public sentiment against YMCA pool tables. More than 200 persons responded to a secretary driven inquiry, with a large majority opposing the tables. Directors plan action at the November meeting.
Daniel A. Dooley abandoned his run for Bayonne New Jersey Alderman after eloping with his bride. He cited not wanting to spend three or four evenings a week at City Hall and withdrew the candidacy a week ago. the reason became public yesterday.
A committee to plan the child welfare exhibit at the old Leyden House on Peachtree Street, November 24 to December 5, will be appointed Saturday afternoon by the Associated Charities executive committee. The group will also seek civic organization participation, with honorary chairman Mrs John M. Sinton and chairman Mrs Charlee J. Haden among others.
Mrs. Josephus Daniels secretary of the Navy wife will host a luncheon November 13 for Jessie Woodrow Wilson the thirteenth White House bride. The event features thirteen courses and favors of tiny gold thirteens twined into a lovers knot, with mystic symbols woven into the celebration.
London report says Queen Mary shows increasing favor to Consuelo Vanderbilt the Duchess of Marlborough and works toward reconciling the couple. The Duchess has taken a keen interest in prisoners and helps place women prisoners and released men in work.
In Mobery Missouri a yearly coon hunt attended by Governor Elliott W Major and National Committeeman Edward Gottra and state officials ended with the capture of a wild man who had lived in the woods since 1890 Gottra won the prize nine coons of the event
