Oakland City Faces Tax and Stop-At Crossings Clash

Oakland City officials clash with the Georgia Railway and Electric Company over a $300 tax on an express car and an ordinance requiring streetcars to stop at designated crossings. Motormen and conductors were charged with violating the stop rule and will plead before the mayor’s court, with the case likely to go to the Georgia Supreme Court on appeal. Mayor Henry C. Beerman said the city sought compliance on poles and crossings, while company VP T. K. Glenn called the dispute a tempest in a teapot and defended running the express car as an accommodation.
