In Mexico City on February 17 fighting resumed between the federals and Diaz forces. Artillery bombardment targeted the national palace and Madero's guns. neither side gained ground as cannonade continued and casualties mounted on both sides amid heavy fire.
Washington dispatch details Madero’s plea to President Taft asking the American government to avoid war ships and actions that could inflame the Mexican capital. Springfield Illinois February 17 Ten tentative plans to elect Lawrence Sherman and James Hamilton Lewis United States senators not later than Thursday Sherman for the long term and Lewis for the short term await approval of Woodrow Wilson Negotiations are under way between Springfield and New Jersey the president elects home It is believed Governor Wilson has been told it is impossible to elect two Democrats from Illinois to the senate under any conditions only one Democrat at most can be elected and Colonel Lewis the primary nominee can be elected only under terms agreed to by ambassadors of the respective parties
Macon Georgia celebrates Sidney Lanier's birth anniversary at Wesleyan College chapel with an address by Dr. John E. White. Harry Stillwell Edwards presents a life size portrait to the Macon Volunteers. Lanier served in the war as a member of the Volunteers.

Hammond Ind Feb 17 The Noblesville woman Herstiel Bailey sued Isaac Peck for five thousand dollars for a quart of blood transfused to Peck in a hospital. The jury awarded Bailey twenty five dollars in damages.

Calhoun Georgia February 17 Chief of Police Montgomery says he captured James Rogs of Acworth a new kind of blind tiger after a Chattanooga to Atlanta train stop. Rogs fled but was caught with four pints and four half pints of whisky in separate packages and drinking gear. He reportedly voyaged between Chattanooga and Acworth dispensing drinks to travelers and customers at the station.
Ambrose W Hodnett, a wealthy grain dealer, shot himself in his Piedmont avenue home after business reverses. He awoke his wife and child before firing a 32 caliber revolver into his brain, leaving his family in shock as investigators note his recent failed contracts and mounting debt. Relatives say he appeared in good spirits hours earlier, having attended church with his wife and daughter Margaret. He left notes of farewell and quietly departed after the tragedy.
