A coalition of Atlanta Civvic league women urged charter revision to include suffrage rights in Atlanta’s new charter. The petition cites taxpaying women as taxpayers seeking representation in tax assessors and bonds, noting examples from Salt Lake City, Denver, Seattle, and other cities where women vote or hold offices.
A local charter debate shows women leaders urging public vote while officials argue suffrage is set by the state constitution. The committee plans to abolish existing city offices and education board, with a fall election for a mayor, ten councilors, and six trustees to run administration including schools and libraries.
Vidalia Georgia February 5. Cigarettes may be purchased only for a fifteen minute period each morning from 9:45 to 10. For the rest of the day the lid is on. The city seeks a $100 cigarette tax, and veterans bearing free state licenses began business the same day. Officials expect the veterans to gain normal hours.
Southern railway officials halted the Washington Limited train No 40 at Sanatorium Ga to let off Joseph Johns an eleven year old tuberculosis patient en route to a tuberculosis hospital. The matron at Terminal station received a telegram from Waycross asking to watch for the boy. Officials ordered the conductor to unload him at the Sanatorium hospital.
In Trenton New Jersey on February 5 Charles S Barrett of Union City Georgia president of the Farmers Union received strong support for appointment as secretary of agriculture. Farmers union officials F T McDaniels J P Doyle L Thomas and W F Tate conferred with President elect Wilson for over an hour urging Barretts candidacy. Wilson said no cabinet announcements would be made until the eve of his inauguration.
The Weather Bureau reports fair moderately cold conditions for Atlanta tonight and tomorrow with morning lows near 28 degrees. The Northwest remains in a cold wave with Duluth, Minnesota hitting 24 degrees below zero. Chicago endures zero weather, but Atlanta is unaffected by the cold snap.
Catherine Tyndle of Nanticoke is celebrated for her vigor at 107. She does her own housework and washes for four families, aids neighbors, and has raised nine children with two now sixty four, the baby 52. She also helps rear 35 grandchildren and twelve great grandchildren.
Detective Sergeant I M Cornwell from Washington, DC arrived in Atlanta to oversee Castor Rivera the young Porto Rican medical student wanted in the capital on a charge by a young woman. He will be arraigned before a US commissioner this afternoon and sent back to Washington tomorrow morning. Rivera will not offer any resistance.
Recorder Broyles condemned Mrs. W C Edwards of 154 Stones Avenue and her husband W C Edwards for alleged abuse of fourteen year old Ilona Edwards. The father was bound over on assault charges and jailed. the mother fled, believed to be in Alabama, as detectives pursue her and the girl remains missing.
Miss Gladys Scoggins, a Newnan girl, tearfully affirmed love for Ross D. Rimes of Ludowici as he awaited arraignment for alleged coercion with the girl. The father expressed bitter regret he did not kill Rimes after finding them together. Scoggins said she met Rimes last fall while working in his Ludowici millinery shop and insisted she will not return home.
Mrs. Lorraine Rountree said no evidence the two men who tried to enter 104 Luckie street at night were plain clothes detectives. Neighbors said the men appeared as plain clothes officers after a neighbor’s joking remark. The incident occurred about 1:29 AM Tuesday as two women hid after stealthy tapping and lights flashed in their faces, and the men escaped.
