Pittsburg December 31 A record-breaking tonnage rise in prices and a surge in overseas trade marked the coal industry in the United States during 1912. Bituminous coal totaled 457,202,000 tons and anthracite 82,500,000 tons, totaling 539,702,000 tons, up from 496,188,568 in 1911. West Virginia led in bituminous tonnage, followed by Illinois.
President elect Woodrow Wilson and his family were invited to attend the Arabian Nights charity ball in Chicago on January 10. Wilson is to speak January 11, with organizers hoping he may adjust plans to arrive a day earlier. A special box is reserved pending New Jersey governor’s reply.
In Marked Tree Arkansas on December 31 William Johns and Alex Smith quarreled over a girl. Johns threw a can of corn striking Smith on the head and killing him. Johns was arrested.
In Macon Georgia on December 31 reports say Judge Park unlikely to call a special term for the case of Mrs. Katherine King and Jesse Nick Wilburn. Petitions circulate for an April trial, while Sheriff Roberts restricts visits to Mrs. King and notes a new confession about plots to kill James King.
Chicago, Dec. 31. Auction of the Judson C. Sherman estate at Lake Geneva will be held Thursday morning in front of the property. Jack Johnson, the black prize fighter, has purchased an option and says whites and blacks will have an equal chance to bid. Sherman claims millionaire residents aim to block the sale, but he insists the place will go to the highest bidder and that blacks will not be barred from bidding.

Dispatches from Durazzo report 800 Servians and captive Turks without medical care and facing famine. Armistice conditions block land aid and the Greek blockade at Avlona prevents water relief, leading to hundreds of deaths from neglect and starvation.
Athens Ga December 31 The schedule in the Carr Boyd Co failure at Maysville was filed with the United States deputy clerk and shows total liabilities exceeding one million dollars while assets total about five hundred forty eight thousand dollars. The figures list liabilities at 1 039 204 86 and assets at 548 490 86.
