Muted battle: forces from Charleston and Concord race to the fort amid heavy shelling. Casualties emerge as the fight rages near Monterey, with Marines and volunteers landing, gunfire driving engagements along the shore and reports of wounded and captured.
Rear Admiral Watson forwards a brief account of the Subig Bay engagement from Manila. Marines and sailors supported destruction of insurgent positions at Klan Point and Subig Bay, with heavy gunfire and a bombardment preceding a land assault. The insurgents insisted on fortifications though their artillery appears limited. Secretary Allen notes Manila’s lack of a coastal fort threat and that the bay shores remain guarded by the fleet.
Miss Julia Dent Grant, granddaughter of General Grant, married Prince Cantacuzene in a Russian Orthodox ceremony at Beau Lieu Newport. The wedding followed American rites yet to be conformed to before the marriage is complete. Attending were numerous relatives and notable guests as the ceremony spanned an hour and nocturnal celebrations concluded with the Russian national hymn.

Nathar W Trimble, a 24 year old man of wealth and notable parentage in Birmingham, was arrested this afternoon at Windsor Hotel by Den tal station detectives after a telegram, allegedly from Birmingham police, claimed he committed grand larceny. He denied sending the dispatch and was taken to central station. Officials in Birmingham and Sheriff O Brien knew nothing of any charge, and the telegram appeared to be a hoax. Trimble is the son of Nathan W Trimble, a former federal court clerk in northern Alabama.
Official dispatches report two battles between Yaquis and Mexican forces. In separate clashes near Vicam and Lake Zameca, Mexican units led by Luis Torres and Colonel Hernandes faced rear-guard Yaqui resistance, with Mexican losses tallied at 5 killed and 9 wounded in one action and 14 killed and 36 wounded in the other, including Major Russe and Captain Espinosa dying.
Mayor Jones of Toledo the Golden Rule candidate for governor arrived too late to address a large crowd in Government Square. He spoke to workingmen at Chester Park in the afternoon and to a crowd near the Garfield statue in the evening, then gave a short sermon at Vine Street Congregational church on applying Christianity to political problems.
Commander C T Hate, commandant of naval academy cadets, issues four new rules to stop hazing. Fourth class cadets may not accept or seek visits to upperclass rooms without officer in charge permission, attempting to end the unwritten custom of upperclassmen hazing.
Miss Emily Adolphson of Jameson identified by Rev P Martinson as the murdered Falconer house servant and church member. Autopsy suggests pregnancy. Police report a young man named Frank Vannerholm of Jameson arrested, with bloody clothing found in his room and a razor linked to him near the scene.
A Ottawa dispatch to The Mall and Empire reports the Forty-eighth Highlanders of Toronto and the Royal Scots pipe band of Montreal are refused permission to visit New York for Admiral Dewey celebration events. Officials say the gathering will mark US Spanish War victories, making British units’ involvement politically unwise. The decision bars Canadian troops from marching in the Dewey tribute.

He has shown limited activity since returning home to Paterson, with repeated relapses hampering his work capacity.
Daniel F Dougherty also known as Big Doc, an American bank robber and murderer, is to be released from Manchester prison on Friday. He was convicted of murder in 186? and sentenced to life, with a prior 1868 bank robbery sentence in Charlestown, Massachusetts. His pardon cites health reasons. He is expected to travel to the United States.
James Lynch, a noted burglar and diamond robber who fled the penitentiary, was captured today at Shepard's station near Columbus. He wore a disguise as an old man with a cane and was identified by voice by detectives nearby. Lynch fled but was halted by gunfire. he claimed a guard aided his escape.
The board of directors of the Jewish hospital for consumptives at Denver met and decided to open the hospital on November 15. The combined Jewish Benevolent Societies of Cincinnati voted a perpetual annuity of $5,000 for the hospital's support.
A massive Atlanta mass meeting at the Grand Opera House launched a Twentieth Century fund drive. Speakers including Bishop Candler and Charles B. Galloway urged universal Methodist support, with subscriptions surpassing previous efforts and targeting education in the South.
