Great Britain reels from the torpedoing of the Aboukir first and the Cressy and Hogue later as they moved to aid. Submarines sent to the bottom. Life loss heavy with likely under seven hundred saved of over two thousand men aboard the cruisers.
Virginia votes show statewide prohibition with a large margin as returns come in. Drys lead 82 325 with city results mixed. only four cities favor prohibition while others show opposition. Final statewide tally and county results remain to come as counties report incomplete totals.
Petrograd reports Russian troops occupy the fortified Austrian town of Jaroslav, a key railroad hub seventeen miles north northwest of Przemysl on the Lemberg Cracow line. The Russian flag flies over the town and a bridge over the S10 controls the passage. Cracow residents flee as Polish volunteers refuse to defend Cracow, fearing destruction elsewhere.
New York September 22 The vessel Germania owned by the Fabre Steamship Line was struck from the list and will now sail as Britannia. The ship operates between its port and Marseille, reflecting the company’s naming update.
Survivors reported two of five German boats sank the British cruisers Aboukir Hogue and Cressy off the North Sea.
