New York and New Orleans reports show cotton rising sharply as Liverpool firmness and private crop reports spur buyers. October reaches 11.01 while January hits 11.67, with spot cotton above 11 cents in Atlanta amid widespread market activity and rumors of cold south weather.
Anthony Comstock secretary of the New York Society for the Suppression of Vice died at his Summit New Jersey home after a brief illness. He contracted a cold on vacation ten days earlier that developed into pneumonia. Formed in 1873, the society and Comstock led crusades against exhibitions and so called works of art, with thousands of arrests and convictions reported.
The Hague September 22. An automobile carrying Queen Wilhelmina and her daughter Princess Juliana collided with another car in the woods near The Hague. The royal auto was damaged but no one was injured.
Delegates of the Georgia Farmers Union at the state house demand a minimum 12 1/2 cents for cotton and press for the Shipp state warehouse bill in the governor’s extra session call. Washington report notes business conditions throughout the country are improving and trade generally is picking up, according to members of the federal advisory council who met with the federal reserve board. Virtually every section of the country was represented. The council did not take up the loan request by American bankers to the Allies.
