George Weber Brewing Company of McMicken Avenue filed for insolvency with assets around 350,000 dollars. Assignments arise from collateral held by the Chase Cal Bank of New York. The Whisky Trust expands distilleries in Peoria while several others remain out. Robbery at Lion National Bank in Duluth. cashier Ware lost 220 dollars and suspects investigated. Southern soldiers in Washington visit the Treasury and National Life Insurance offices.
A string of deadly rail incidents unfolds from Dubuque to Cincinnati and beyond. Two trains collided near Eagle Point causing multiple deaths among engineers and crew. A separate disaster near Monanaqua involved explosive carloads and killed several workers. Other wrecks include a passenger collision and a wreck near Fern Station.
Sperial W. G. Wanley of Carthage was arrested after a deputy sheriff J. B. Warman was killed in DeKalb county. A mob attempted to seize Wanley in Rome and Carthage, leading to his transfer by circuitous route to Lebanon and then Nashville. Wanley denies involvement in the killing.
An incendiary from the 11 year old Evening Star fire on South Seventh Street was arrested after fugitive flight. Henry P. Volkmar, once in the building, was held on $5,000 bail which was forfeited. He was tracked to Mill Bank Oak and Dakota officers brought him back this evening.
Two men, Fayette and John Darnelle, were shot from a thicket while returning home from Galesville in Carryall County. John Darnelle died instantly. Newt Blackwell, brother of Rev. Dick Blackwell, was among the dead. Excitement runs high as both sides face possible further trouble amid a violent incident near Erien, Texas.
P G Bowman a well known lawyer assailed Colonel BR Wallace at the National Bank of Sumter. Bowman struck Wallace with a cane and drew a pistol as Wallace blocked a prior claim about the bank wreckings. Police and friends intervened, Bowman’s attack halted. Rumor says Bartlett may testify from San Antonio with immunity discussions.
The Southern Presbyterian Theological Seminary in Columbia reopened after a two year closure due to the evolution controversy. Fourteen students enrolled with more expected. faculty includes Dr. J. L. Girardeau, Dr. J. D. Ladagan, and Dr. C. C. Hersman. The pastoral theology chair will be shared among faculty. no successor yet for the natural sciences chair once held by Dr. Woodrow as Perkins professor in revelation studies.
The Louisville and Nashville case against publication of Midland railroad material was heard. Chancellor All overruling the motion for a temporary injunction, stating the contract terms are unclear and the American cannot enforce them against the complainants.
At Loxvoy on September 19 a promised world championship foot race collapsed as Gent and Hutchins did not appear. Thousands jeered, rioters attacked the grounds, burned fences and buildings, looted a nearby liquor booth, and pelted police and firemen with bottles. Three hours of chaos followed before police restored order. a railroad inspector died from the excitement.
Five men suffered a near-drowning ordeal when their yacht toppled after a squall near Fort Peake and Tybee wharf. They lost coats and personal gear, drifted to sea for hours, then reached Mr Queen's land above Fort Pulaski before walking to the Tybee railroad track into the city.
The Savannah Cotton Exchange held a noon ceremony to deliver its new building. Dignitaries including the mayor, bank chiefs, railroad and telegraph reps attended. Building committee chair J B Duckworth presided as the structure was handed to its owners. Captain Flannery echoed the welcome and praised future prosperity.
