General Leonard Wood, governor general of Cuba, raced Georgia rail lines and plotted routes to reach Canton for President McKinley’s funeral. Washouts and damaged tracks blocked the plan, forcing a move to a special Southern train from Cochran to Savannah and onward to Washington. Wood’s motive was filial and political duty, not display.
A massive procession of mourners along the route from Johnstown to Canton witnessed the funeral train bearing President McKinley’s casket pass through towns and mills. Women knelt with raised hands as workers and families lined depots and streets, ten thousand strong, in a somber, ceremonial pageant of grief.
Philadelphia reports United States Senator Penrose rode three days through Idaho wilds and four and a half days by rail to reach Canton for President McKinley's funeral. He had been on a hunting trip in the West and started east when news arrived.
