Remains of a figure presumed to be McKinley are borne through Buffalo amid a crowd of bareheaded mourners. The procession forms a living train as pallbearers carry the casket along the street in a solemn public tribute.
In Washington September 16 the nation watched President McKinley’s coffin carried from Buffalo to the capital. Thousands lined tracks from Buffalo through the Alleghenies to Baltimore and beyond, with flags at half mast and grief evident in towns and cities. Mrs. McKinley spent time beside the coffin as the funeral train moved, preceded by a pilot engine to ensure safety. Over 900,000 people are estimated to have seen the coffin by nightfall.
William McKinley’s silent body was carried from Milburn House in Buffalo to Washington. Thousands lined the route as the pall covered president led a restrained, solemn funeral train toward the depot, with Mrs. McKinley and President Roosevelt among those depicted before the journey continues.

Grenwood Springs reports a gas explosion at 5 30 in the Colorado Fuel and Iron Spring Gulch mine likely killing about one hundred miners at work. The blast caved entries mangled bodies, with names including John Anders George Cassenger Peter Deldora David Caller P G Pickerton and an unknown Italian among the confirmed dead.
Efforts to link Chicago anarchists to a plot to assassinate President McKinley will be abandoned. Prisoners likely to be released tomorrow with habeas corpus proceedings pending. Chief O Neill fears safety issues and may allow them to stay in the county jail until after observances of the late president.
Leon Czolgosz alias Fred Nieman was indicted by the Erie County grand jury for murder in the first degree after fatally shooting President McKinley at the Pan American exposition. He refused to answer questions about counsel, prompting the court to appoint Lorain L. Lewis and Robert C. Titus to defend him. Witnesses listed include doctors, guards, and police, with 45 witnesses testifying. The indictment followed a ten day grand jury session. he was moved to jail and arraignment scheduled.
