At 2 50 a m Sept 13 Buffalo physicians report President McKinley critically ill and gravely concerned. The heart weak, pulse small, respiration 30, temperature 100, skin warm. Bowels moved well. he remains conscious and is under restorative treatment as cabinet members and doctors stay nearby.
Admiral Schley wins the first round in the court of inquiry into the Santiago campaign. He objects to Admiral Howison as a member, citing preformed opinions. Howison is relieved. Hackett to appoint a successor as Dewey and Benham oversee the proceedings.
In Charleston on September 12 a mass meeting of 5000 African Americans heard Booker T. Washington of Tuskegee Institute condemn the reckless act of the red handed anarchist and praise a southern negro for saving President McKinley. Resolutions expressed sympathy for the president and his wife.
York dispatch reports the Sham id and crew faced a fierce squall driving 64 miles per hour. With a sixty foot mast leaning and water shallow near Flynn's Knoll, Captain Sycamore fought to steer clear. Crewmembers aloft freed the topsail as the yacht steadied and escaped into deeper water.
Marquette Michigan September 12 armed farmer Lupton holding off neighbors with a shotgun delaying help as his property including a barn with 169 tons of hay a house and vehicles burns. He fled to the woods and was found later concealed in a hay stack believed to be demented with wife and family.
Savannah man Beinne Gordon testifies in U S government suit over Carter property. He says he borrowed 10 000 in fall 1896 by mortgaging his own property and that R F Westcott, Carter’s father in law, financed the loan and later transferred the mortgage to Carter. He asks for the mortgage to be re transferred to him and for the amount due to be placed in custody of a bank or trustee. The loan, he says, was legitimate business.
Washington reports from the Maracaibo consul that Tachira is quiet but La Guagua frontier shows a grave situation with large Colombian troop detachments missing. Fights occur with Venezuelan forces. recruiting surges and steamers seized for government use cripple commerce. Commander Sargent says isthmus of Panama is tranquil and insurgent forces largely broke since July 1901.
The Colombian legation in Bogota reports no authentic news of Rio Hacha bombardment and notes Ecuador will remain neutral toward Colombia. A Quito letter dated August says Ecuador will stay neutral and the legation notes Heurodor’s neutral policy. Reported South American turmoil says about twenty five thousand killed since the rebellion began with gruesome claims of mass casualties.
Messengers were hurried from a house in Burraxo New York at about 3 30 am as dispatches were believed to be sent out. Reports indicate urgency and a possible unfolding incident in the early hours. Local authorities were notified and investigations are expected to determine the nature of the dispatches.
