Palma enforces martial law on an island amid political unrest. Authorities suspend normal rights, control movement, and restrict gatherings as security forces stabilize the area. The order targets suspected dissidents and public demonstrations. Local leaders condemn the measure as heavy handed while aid groups warn of humanitarian impact.
Havana reports decree suspends constitutional guarantees and imposes martial law in Pinar del Rio Havana and Santa Clara provinces. Prominent liberals including Alfred Zayas disappear while veterans urge action. In the United States the cruiser Des Moines pursues filibusters near the Florida coast as arms head toward Cuba.
Inverness Baltimore September 10 A notice reports the engagement and upcoming marriage of James Henry Smith of Chicago to Mrs Whinelander Stewart of Baltimore. Smith, a wealthy bachelor, recently inherited estate valued at upwards of 950 million from his uncle George. Mrs Stewart is sister of Anthony J. Drexel of Philadelphia.
A September incident at a UAW meetup sickened ten men after consuming tainted dried meat. Doctors suspect embalming fluid used as a preservative in the meat from a pickling house, causing the illness. Local officials are investigating the origin and safety of the product.
Reports from Stedlice and Biedice in Poland on September 10 describe a violent crackdown by soldiers and police. At least 200 Jews killed and over 3,000 wounded, with widespread arson and looting. Authorities demand surrender of leaders, threatening bombardment. hundreds detained, many wounded. The violence spread from War saw to Rudusowski and Latessa streets, with artillery used after Governor Skeilon requested permission.
Portland Maine September 10 Governor William T Cobb Republican reelected by a margin under 8000 the smallest for a Republican Maine governor Cyrus W Davis Democrat polled large vote resubmission of liquor question in legislature four years ago Congressman Littlefield reelected with reduced plurality labor opposition from Samuel Gompers Taft La Follette Beveridge among backers. Burleigh Powers Allen also noted in tight contests as Republicans claim legislature will remain GOP controlled.
The Kwarell Kebina landslide buried about six feet of mud and rocks, overwhelming the township. At least 288 people are reported buried alive with fifty five bodies recovered so far, as homes and crops are destroyed in the Cauca Valley region.
In Hot Springs Arkansas on September 10 George Milling shot and killed Anwald Bush in a feud sparked by a woman. Milling surrendered immediately after the shooting and is a well known photographer in the area.
Eugene A Shields, in custody at the police station, faced charges after an assault by T J Triplett of T I Triplett & Co. Shields had earlier been arrested on a seduction warrant involving Miss Rosebud Tripigg, daughter of Mr Triplett. Triplett attacked Shields, who was then fined on another matter, while Shields filed a counter charge. Bond set at 900 dollars for preliminary hearing Thursday.
In Aguata Georgia September 10 a clash occurred in the city court room during a case with defendant W H Bush, a stock and bond broker. Attorney O R Eve and Bush exchanged blows after a rival witness claim prompted insults. Both men will be tried tomorrow for contempt of court.
In St Petersburg central detention prison Mile Bemennova a medical student was shot dead by a sentry while offering sugar to prisoners. Furious inmates seized the warden and barricaded the jail, placing Bemennova’s corpse on a blown improvised bier and swearing to die rather than surrender. Authorities feared further unrest and ordered a border removal as the incident sparked a violent uprising.
A Puebla passenger train en route to Mexico City collided at Panzacola with a mixed train after a switchman failed to switch tracks. The impact wrecked the through train cars, killing passenger Romero and injuring eight others. The third coach was badly damaged with several passengers hurt.
The Alabama Democratic convention solidified D. B. Comer supporters' control by voting to expand the state executive committee and elect them by statewide vote. The platform endorsed Bryan and Bryan era policies, called for strong regulation of corporations, and included a controversial proposal to require direct popular election of U.S. senators.
Lakeville Connecticut September 10 District Attorney Jerome will attend the Democratic state convention in Buffalo on September 28 He says he will go as a potential gubernatorial candidate not as a delegate or alternative His main interest lies in the convention platform criticizing past platforms for catering to various elements and vows to support the committee if nominated but will not press his ideas on the platform
New York September 10 James Colgate head of James B Colgate Co and holder of 1 8 million policy in Mutual Life Insurance Co makes public letter backing the administration ticket. He calls for a meeting of large policy holders to form Mutual Life Protective Association to back the administration and criticizes the International policy holders committee methods. Excluding Rodman Wanamaker Colgate is among the largest US policy holders and says most invitees will attend.
October date set for execution in the Carter children murder case. Milan and Jeara Rawlings to be hanged October 2. Taonora Rawlings to imprisonment. Leonard Rawlings denies guilt. Moore already sentenced to death for complicity. J. G. Rawlings’ U S Supreme Court motion pending.
On September 10 11 a wreck on the Southern Pacific Coast Line at Sea Clute injured Mr and Mrs G W Howard of Atlantis. Howard suffered a cut to his left thigh and Mrs G W Howard sustained injuries to her right side. Also noted is the Atlantic City Homeopathic Congress opening in September with meetings and officer elections.
A street confrontation erupted as a mob clashed with the Trisco police force, resulting in chaotic scenes as officers attempted to disperse the unrest and restore order across the thoroughfare. Police used standard crowd control methods while evacuating bystanders and securing nearby shops.
San Francisco report says about 200 strike breakers marched from the car barns at Turk and Fillmore to the Ferry Building after a strike. Police escorted the group. several officers fired, many wounded. About 12 men were arrested and sent by patrol wagon to the lockup as illness and injuries mounted at city hospitals.
