In Rennes on September 10 Dreyfus endures the verdict with calm. He signs the revision petition, speaks little, and hopes for release around October 15 after five years on Devil’s Island. A man of unknown identity, said to be in extreme poverty, climbed the Brooklyn Bridge between the towers this morning and leaped into the East River. Eyewitnesses described the plunge, the body sinking and reappearing briefly as the flood tide carried it away. Bridge police recovered his hat coat and shoes but no identifying clues.

Dallas, September 10 reports a fifty two day drought with 100 degree highs ending as rain fell today but only lightly. The drought is described as the worst in weather bureau history, threatening the water supply and forcing water saving measures. Heavy rains north of the city may refill rivers and provide a surplus, while a new experiment to spray crude petroleum on streets starts tomorrow.
Paris September 10 The day passed quietly with no public disturbance in Paris though protests erupted in Marseilles and Belfort after the Dreyfus court martial verdict. Demange plans to visit Waldeck-Rousseau to raise legal questions from the trial while officials deny German influence. Waldeck-Rousseau’s cabinet is unsettled and Loubet remains away.
A suspect linked to Thornton’s murder is jailed in Brandon after Laurin's disappearance and a tense political confrontation. Governor vows swift action as details remain under guard.
Jackson reports a mob near Brandon and Raleigh to seize white prisoner James McAlpin for trial in Smith county on a murder charge. Governor McLaurin rushed to Brandon, ordered Mississippi Rifles to guard the prisoner, and may dispatch them to Raleigh to disperse the mob. McAlpin allegedly killed Thornton and hid the body in a swamp.
In Ellisville near Bunker Hill, Bud Sullivan about twenty two years old was shot and killed by unknown parties. Two months earlier George Sullivan was killed in an ambush. Desperadoes have repeatedly shot into a home and wounded livestock as two heavily armed factions operate in the area. Residents fear a wider clash or more killings under cover of ambush.
Salt St. Marie Mich September 10 The embargo on Lake Superior navigation ended at 3 30 this afternoon after the sinking of the steamer Douglas Houghton in the Sea Passage last Tuesday The largest fleet ever assembled on the lakes began moving soon after a vast naval procession sailed down the lakes while another started toward Lake Superior Over 20 vessels of the American flag led the flotilla which stretched for miles It promises the greatest naval display in the United States and a race to the receiving dock with prizes and freight prices dictating swift action
Washington September 19 Adjutant General William C Liller of Lancaster Pa Spanish War veteran received a telegram from Miss Helen M Gould stating her unanimous election as sponsor for the Spanish War Veterans Association and her pleasure in accepting the honor with thanks to the association.
Dayton Tennessee September 16 Special miners of the Dayton Coal and Iron Company return to work after several days out on strike. The company refused to reinstate a number of union men, claimed to be agitative. Six hundred fifty men are affected.
The Mississippi board reports one yellow fever case in Jackson involving city clerk D P Porter of Northwest Street near the penitentiary. Porter is not expected to live tonight. Doctors trace exposure to New Orleans via a brother who recently visited there. Isolation is enforced. a year ago today the first Jackson case appeared at about the same hour. Residents face limited exodus as some plan to stay.
Health Officer Doty reports four patients from Key West, who were removed from the steamer Lampasas at Swinburne Inland, have developed yellow fever in New York City. The cases are linked to the voyage and reflect a cluster of illness among recent travelers.
Jacksonville reports suspected yellow fever at Port Tampa City with one death. Dr. Porter, state health officer, cites suspicious cases at a hospital nine miles from Port Tampa. A Tampa board of health representative says there is no suspicion there.
Key West reports twenty three new fever cases and two fatalities in the last day. many residents are being moved to the Dry Tortugas detention camp as the outbreak remains severe. In New Orleans, state health officials say conditions are improving under President Souchon’s guidance.
