In Ducktown Tennessee the American Federation of Labor formed a miners lodge with 350 members. Ducktown Sulphur Copper and Iron Company and Tennessee Copper Company posted notices vowing not to recognize the union or employ union men. The first company discharged all union men at the Mary mine, leaving eight non union workers and closing the mine. The second company did not yet discharge workers, but a strike seems likely. Dispute centers on company doctor and union drive.
In Montgomery Alabama September special Booker T. Washington publishes a card denying his wife made any statement about southern convict lease systems as reported by Chicago dispatches. He says she spoke of nothing on the matter and that remarks were likely confused with another speaker.
News from Clay and Perry counties reports Henry Marcum and James Roberts murdered in ambushes amid renewed Kentucky feuds. Griffins and Philpots mobilize armed followers to seize James Griffin for trial, while authorities seek to prevent further violence and a potential clash between factions.
Governor Johnston issued four pardons in Montgomery on September 8 including John Boston of Russell County. Boston, described as a fat ignorant country negro, was jailed for six months for chicken stealing. He was paroled with a twelve month condition not to buy steal or eat another chicken.
Carson Nevada September 8 This general western Nevada holiday closed mines and suspended business as Hon W J Bryan spoke to 7000 people in Capitol Square after a 2000 mile journey. He defended silver and opposed expansion imperialism and militarism before leaving for the east.
The Florida railroad commission orders Jacksonville Terminal Company to allow Atlantic Valdosta and Western to use Jacksonville union depot with full terminal facilities. The railway must pay 5100 dollars annual rent in advance plus wheelage charges, as Flagler Plant and Williams appeal to higher courts amid expectations the ruling will be challenged as unconstitutional.
The letter carriers elected officers in Scranton Pennsylvania with John W. Parsons of New York chosen as president. Other officers include Charles D. Duffy of Chicago as vice president X W Cantwell of Brooklyn as secretary Alax McDonald of Grand Rapids as treasurer and an executive committee listing John N McElroy Bridgeport A K Young Cincinnati A J Michener St Louis H B Seaton Denver and William B Moynisham Rochester. The National Sculpture Society submitted plans for the Dewey arch at Broadway and Fifth Avenue with an estimated cost of 26 500. Columns form part of the arch and a colonade is half completed. Admiral Dewey figures stand about twelve feet high. A united chorus from Arion and Liederkranz will sing aboard the harbor float Peace. Troop arrivals may exceed 10 000 with 300 West Point cadets and 200 New Jersey militiamen added today.
William C. Pape, general superintendent of parks and political figure in St Louis, was shot and killed at his home by Henry Fry, a huckster. Fry fled, later killed himself as pursuing officers closed in. The motive cited was an alleged promise of a peddler license in exchange for political service.
Washington September 8 General Miles urged purchasing rapid fire guns for the Philippines but his recommendation was disapproved by General Buffington. Secretary Root visited to witness a test and reportedly supports using the gun though the number to be sent remains unknown.
