A Charleston woman was killed in her home amid a burglary entry. Police report indicates a suspect broke in, resulting in fatal injuries before the spouse arrived. The investigation continues as authorities seek motive and suspects.
In Charleston district, Willam Avant, a Georgetown County planter, shot and killed Mrs C C Bigham during a nighttime search near Sunnyside plantation. Dr Bisham and Mr Avant observed a dark figure, were advised to shoot, and Avant fired, striking Mrs Bigham in the back. Avant reported the incident to Georgetown and aided authorities at Murrells Inlet.
In Heel Michigan a fast Michigan Central train struck an automobile killing three people. The car owner identified as A Robinson of the Commercial Supply Company and his wife, along with Mrs FE Tremaine of Bay City, died at the scene. A Tremaine daughter is described as fatally injured and remains in Bay City.
Clyde Fitch, noted American playwright born 1865 in New York, died after an operation in France. He had gone abroad over a month ago to witness European theater, oversee rights to his plays, and finish two works for New York production this season. He was reportedly in usual health before leaving.
Atlantic City N J reopened Sunday business after reformers failed to close saloons and arrest Mayor Stoy. State and special detectives policed gaming houses while authorities plan further warrants next week. Hud harm?
Marshal J A Buffington of College Park awoke to a night fire that cut off all exits except a window as a black hand warning warned of calamity. Fearing an incendiary shot if he and his wife appeared, he acted quickly to escape. Continued on Page Two.
Copenhagen report says King Frederick invited Dr Frederick Cook to dine at Charlottenlund after a formal audience. Danish explorers endorsed Cook's polar claim, and the king's reception, with royal family present, signaled strong belief in his spacecraft narrative of reaching the North Pole.
The report notes Dr Frederick A Cook may present observations to Superintendent Truman of the United States Coast and Geodetic Survey. Tittman believes Cook reached the Pole, using simple instruments during 24 daylight months. New Castle, Pa September 5 two men with severe injuries are held on suspicion of wrecking a Baltimore and Ohio train at Chewton Siding last Friday. Frank Coates of Ellwood City once worked as a railroad brake man and lost his right leg after an earlier accident. Herman McComachy of New Castle lost his right eye in a street fight. Despite 12 hours of questioning, police say the suspects’ stories remain unshaken and further examinations will resume tomorrow as a $25,000 railroad reward hangs over the case.
Lick Observatory astronomer Dr W H Wright states Cook could have found the North Pole with under 500 feet error using his instruments. With three observations the error might be under ten seconds of arc, about a thousand feet. Wright emphasizes the discovery rests on Cook's veracity alone.
A Copenhagen dispatch recounts Dr. Cook s claim of nearing the Pole with two Eskimo escorts. The icy plain seemed to move, a great fissure opened behind them, and the Eskimos, terrified, refused to continue. Cook says he calmed them and pressed on. He admits disappointment at his achievement and fears about the return journey.
The Cuban Legation at Manchester Mass. was expelled when the hotel closed. Madame Garcia Velez, wife of the minister, and her six day old baby were moved on a stretcher to a nearby cottage. Manager Dutton’s wage dispute led to a mob attack. Velez was in Washington. The infant and mother were cared for by Dr. Washburn in a Boston area facility and will travel to New York after recovery.
Labor leaders gather as parade plans unfold with Jerome Jones to preside over exercises at the Grand Opera House. The march begins at the Capitol and proceeds through the principal city streets amid event preparations.
Detailed line of march across Mitchell and Washington streets from the state capitol at 9 30 am with seven divisions including carriages floats and farm formations. Leaders include chief marshal Charles Hirach and aides. Afternoon events feature speeches at the Grand with Governor Brown and other labor officials. Continued on Page Five.
