A large crowd greeted William J. Bryan and John R. McLean in Darke County Ohio as they toured Greenville with a special train from Covington. Bryan defended the 1890s platform, attacked trusts, the income tax, and imperial policy, urging votes for McLean and the Democratic ticket.
In Celina Ohio on October 19 a large crowd heard William Jennings Bryan criticize Mark Hanna as a mouthpiece for God in the Philippines and oppose aggressive expansion. He warned farmers against the Republican party, recalling reverence for Abraham Lincoln and calling for party changes within the GOP.
In Defiance Ohio on October 13 the Bryan party concluded the first day of their Ohio tour before a large audience at the opera house after a street parade. John R. McLean introduced Mr Bryan, who spoke on the presidency, the silver question, and Philippine policy, tying in trusts and the gold standard with Republican policy. He noted strong crowds also gathered at St Marys, Paulding and Rockford.
In Van Wert Ohio on October 19, Mr Bryan arrived at 4 pm and was paraded by carriages through streets filled with cheering crowds at the courthouse. He declared he remained un discouraged by the 1896 defeat, praising the vindication of his position over the last three years and criticizing the gold standard and Republican policy, ending with remarks on trusts and the Philippine policy.
President McKinley and party arrived in Washington at 12 23 p m after a delay near Baltimore caused by a tunnel grade and wet rails. The trip from October 4 covered 5009 miles over eighteen railways arranged by White House officials and the Pennsylvania Railroad Company.
The graves of John Tyler and his wife and daughter will receive a Virginian granite tablet memorial after decades without a marker. The cemetery company will place the monument, leaving only a magnolia tree and minimal existing stones as prior markers. Avery Kale, white, was hanged in Newton after being convicted of killing George Travis at a distillery job site near Catawba last year. Kale shot Travis in the head, killing him instantly, then fled to Marion before enlisting with the Hornets' Nest Riflemen. He was captured, tried, and executed as he requested a thorough hanging lasting thirty minutes.
In Chattanooga on October 19 special reports claimed Julia Morrison, jailed for the murder of New Orleans actor Frank Selden, had lost her mind. Morrison provided The Chattanooga Times with a signed statement asserting she remains sane and in good health, noting she is writing a play and several short stories with a bright, acute intellect.
The Chicago Democratic Marching Club of about 300 members arrived in Lexington with drum band and a parade through main streets in support of Mr. Goebel. They were hosted by Goebel supporters for speeches, then proceeded to Paris Kentucky.
New York report on the Colombia Shamrock America's Cup series shows lighter wind preventing a three straight defender win. Despite Shamrock gaining on the run to the outer mark, wind shifts favored Columbia as both yachts finished with strong sails and penalties. The result leaves open the possibility of two more races on a triangular course tomorrow.
Senator Pritchard spoke in Statesville on the proposed constitutional amendment limiting elector qualifications. He charged it would disenfranchise the poor and illiterate of both races, denying the common people the right to participate in state governance. He argued the plan aims for inheritance of suffrage and masks white supremacy while weakening democracy.
Soldiers of the Forty sixth regiment of volunteers en route to Manila are halted in Cincinnati for drumhead court martials after an epidemic of drunkenness. Thirty offenders are sent to Columbus barracks while additional trials and detentions occur at Valley Junction as trains await transport to St Louis.
Manila October 2 General Young's advance guard of General Law ton's column left Cabiao yesterday morning and entered San Ieléro at 1:30 AM. The American loss was one killed and three wounded. One Spaniard and fifteen insurgents were captured.
A Macon committee met Admiral Dewey, who received them warmly. Congressman Bartlett read resolutions from the Macon chamber of commerce inviting a visit. Dewey expressed affection for Georgia and said it would be a pleasure to visit any portion of the commonwealth, Atlanta especially, to honor his gallant lieutenant.
Naval officer described as a son of the Empire State of the South notes it being the state capital and mentions Congressmen Yoyingston and Bartlett. Livingston praised for introducing a resolution of thanks to command officers, with Bartlett joking about who arrives first to present resolutions. Admiral responds with good natured banter about Livingston.
A Charleston committee representing the city, commercial bodies and German organizations left for Washington to meet Admiral Dewey by appointment Friday morning and extend a formal invitation for a Charleston visit. The delegation includes Mayor Adger Smyth, Major Henry Schade, and T R McGahan, Dewey’s chief quartermaster, a Charleston native set to be honored in his hometown.
In Canton Mississippi on October 19 a house fire at Saint Ann left Mrs. J N Cambrill and her four children dead. The blaze destroyed the residence and all five occupants perished.
The Christian church jubilee missionary convention in Cincinnati adjourned today after a large business session. Tomorrow features farewell receptions and sight seeing for about 12,000 visitors with 5,000 remaining for closing events. Music Hall hosted the singing led by WFE Hanna. Miss Rochel Withers opened the service and introduced visiting missionaries.
The fourteenth annual convention opens in Columbus with over five hundred delegates. Rev Dr Johnson bishop of western Texas delivers the opening charge at Trinity Church as the gathering continues today.
Secretary of the Treasury honors Rasmus Midgett with a gold medal for rescuing ten people from the wrecked schooner Precilla near Gull Shoal Light Saving Status NC during August’s hurricane. The Life Saving Service board recommended the award in Washington on October 19.
The brig Juliana Schlosser, en route to Brazil, reported its helmsman killed the captain, the captain’s wife, and the mate during voyage. Spanish cruiser Infanta Isabel aided authorities, boats exchanged fire, boarding occurred, eleven seamen fled overboard and were rescued, all are imprisoned. The helmsman killed himself, another murdered man was found aboard.
In East Decatur Alabama a race riot overnight leaves two Black residents dead and several wounded, with two jailed. Ringleader Alex Orr was captured at about 7:30 this morning as tensions linger and armed citizens await possible further clashes. The outbreak began after a Black man assaulted a white woman tied to Alex Orr’s wife, spurring revenge and a broadside attack on others. Provisions for Porto Rico noted aboard the US transport Resolute departing New York. New Orleans records one new health case with no deaths.
In London on October 19 the House of Commons crowded to hear Secretary of State for the Colonies Joseph Chamberlain address policy in South Africa. Sir Henry Campbell-Bannerman and Prime Minister Balfour sparred over Milner, Kruger, and Boer sympathy amid criticism from Kilkenny and East Clare MPs. Chamberlain defended government actions, attacked opposition, and denied direct contact with Cecil Rhodes while urging peace and British supremacy in the region.
