Weather outlook shows warmer temperatures in Georgia for Monday with light to moderate winds. Abbeville reports the arrest of John Harris, identified as Policeman Hans Drasbach’s killer. Sheriff Lyon and deputies secured Harris after a chase at the Ferguson place near Abbeville. Harris confessed, blamed liquor for the crime, and was transported by train to Atlanta with Chief Ball and Officer Rosser to face charges.
A telegraph driven pursuit ends as Harris is captured in Abbeville County South Carolina after a two week search. John Warrixs a colored man jailed for the murder of Policeman Drasbach in Atlanta is arrested by Sheriff Lyon and deputies and confesses to the crime. The case links to a whisky fueled killing and a long regional manhunt with rewards posted by Atlanta and Georgia authorities.
A second blaze erupted at Grady hospital in the nurses quarters shortly after 10 pm. A rubbish pile was burned in a brick rear building but the main hospital suffered no damage. The cause remains unknown, with theories of spontaneous combustion or rat activity. Officers Whitley Fleming and Doyal responded with urgency, as nurses and staff evacuated belongings amidst heightened tension.
In St Louis on October 16 police linked the death of John Williams to the Lauman murder case. Williams, a Black man arrested after attempting to sell a revolver, hanged himself in Clayton jail with a sheet amid fears of a mob. Authorities search for others implicated. Lauman’s body was buried today. In Chicago, Harlem race track judges reinstated DJ Lynch after a ruling off the track on August 5.
A massive Boston call to Dr Jen Broughton was declined as he chose to remain in Atlanta. He announced the decision amid crowds at the Tabernacle after prayers and a hymn. He stressed the unfinished state of Atlanta work and pledged to continue leadership, calling for unity and renewed holy living.
The church raised nearly 17 000 to clear debt and fund a new story for the Bible Institute hall with reading rooms baths and classrooms. The renovated space will open to all members and enlarge the auditorium to about 4 000 to 4 500 seats. The Tabernacle supports missions a hospital infirmary nurse training a home for women and children and a dormitory for working girls. Dr Broughton’s Boston call prompts intensified work and revival services resumed by Dr Wilte in Macon.
Rome October 18 The pope has appointed Mgr Merry del Val papal secretary of state in a letter to him. The nomination becomes official at the next consistory when he is made a cardinal. Merry del Val, former secretary of the conclave, is the Spanish ambassador’s brother and long a trusted Rome aide.
King Victor Emmanuel and Queen Helene travel in drizzle to Vincennes for a military review then return to Paris. They ride in full state to the Elysee where an audience and banquet follow before departing by train at Invalides, amid cheering crowds and no incident.
Five thousand people turned away as seats filled at Madison Square Garden for John A Dowie's first New York appearance. Dowie preached from the pulpit amid a crowded, noisy audience, urging quiet and addressing interruptions while noting past city reactions and his stance on accompanying the press.
In Wise county Virginia a Philadelphia millionaire E I Wentz has vanished from the mountains. A party of four thousand men has scoured the area for days without result. His brother Daniel L Wentz raises the reward to 26000 for alive return and 5000 if found dead. The missing man’s father travels from Philadelphia as theories point to murder over trespass disputes with the Virginia Coal and Iron Company or possible kidnapping for ransom.
General Ian Hamilton of the British army visited Savannah and will spend the day in Atlanta as a guest of friends. He will tour Chickamauga Park and Fort McPherson with U S troops under Colonel Butler D. Price, inspecting the military reservation and barracks. Hamilton is noted for his South African War leadership and royal honors upon return to London.
