Kentucky mining strife flares anew in western coal fields

In Kentucky the mining troubles renew, shifting from Hopkins county to Webster where Providence coal mines face a work or be killed ultimatum. Negro miner’s house shot at, he fires back wounding two assailants. Guards and deputies repel later attacks as shootings continue with two reported deaths and around twenty wounded.

Schley court of inquiry hears Capt Cook on Cienfuegos voyage

Captain Francis A. Cook testified on May 19 at Key West and May 24 off Cienfuegos about the Santiago campaign and the blockading squadron. He described signals on shore, plans with McCalla, and the dialogue with Commodore Schley and Captain Chester as tactics to intercept the Spanish fleet. The hearing continued with other witnesses and discussion of reconnaissance and communication between ships.
