In Ozark Alabama October 16 a Black intruder was shot by Mrs Barrow a widow alone at home after he attempted to enter through a window. Nearby Planter Sommers wife fired a heavily charged public safety item fatally wounding a Black man who tried to enter.
In Birmingham on October 10 the Democratic State Executive Committee, with only four members present, voted to hold the next state convention in Montgomery and adopted a plan for county primaries on April 14 and conventions April 21 with the state convention April 25. Johnston opposition, led by Pettus, fought the timing of general assembly elections and a bar-raising voter rule sparked debate over primaries. The committee fixed voter qualifications to invite only whites agreeing to support nominees, leaving Greene County and congressional primary dates for the next meeting.
In Allen's saloon Dr H J Cameron of the Romanoff Land and Mining Company and Dr P D Mahoney an oculist exchanged shots at about seven pm. Two bullets hit Mahoney, one in a vital part and another in the thigh. Cameron was struck twice, one under the jaw and another in the back. Both men are seriously wounded. Mahoney's life is despaired of. Cameron may not survive. Cameron is a noted southern mineral developer tied to Romanoff interests. Mahoney from Covington Ga accompanied by his wife to Alexander City for a short stay.
Sandersville Ga October 10 Special. Local citizens complain about Wallace show circus pictures on billboards. The mayor was petitioned to remove them and has ordered their removal.
Evansville hosts the Blue and Gray national reunion with 4000 veterans arriving by train and six hundred tents at Camp Farragut on the Tri State fair grounds. Major events were delayed by late platform completion and speaker arrivals led by Colonel Pollard B Hill of Macon Georgia.
Dominick C. O Malley proprietor of The Evening Item and C Harrison Parker editor of The Delta fought on Camp street in front of Newspaper Row. Both were seriously wounded with Parker struck in the arm and groin while O Malley suffered gunshots to the groin and leg. A newsboy was shot in the head but survived. The dispute arose over a cartoon depicting Parker as a dog led by a string.
Laurens Circuit Court, presided by Judge R C Watts, adjourns after two days with the courthouse in disarray. A lack of court seals on petit and grand juries, drawn in January and for the term, quashes the entire grand and petit juries. The county lacks a grand jury until January, leaving prisoners from last term facing uncertain outcomes and unfinished business carried to the next term.
North Carolina Supreme Court granted Seaboard Air Line a writ of certiorari and placed the case on the docket after a Charleston firm won $20,000 damages for an ice factory burned by sparks from a railway locomotive. The railroad sought a new trial claiming no negligence. The court gave thirty days to file an appeal.
D E Converse of Spartanburg dies last week and his will probated. His estate about a half million is divided equally among Mrs Converse Miss Converse and Converse College for Women. Nephew and niece in Vermont receive 5000 each. Wife executrix gets the Spartanburg home valued at 25000. Endowment exceeds previous gifts to the college.
In Chattanooga voters chose Joseph Wassman to lead as mayor, with a 10 o'clock saloon closing law central to the race. The ballot featured three candidates with Wassman a straightout Republican, while Democrats and coalitions split alderman seats across eight wards. Two Democrats endorsed the 10 o'clock ordinance. the rest favored modification or opposing it.
Professor A Czeke of Pensacola claims to own the oldest violin in the United States, one of seven made by Gaspard Dulffepruggar. Made in 1816, the maker was born in Welch Tyrol in 1467 and served at the court of Francois I. Other known violins reside in Aix la Chapelle Bologna London St Petersburg.
In Columbus on October 10 special report notes the Georgia state hearing on C. M. Harding of Franklin Ohio regarding alleged embezzlement from Marietta Georgia Paper Company. The hearing adjourned for a week while a civil settlement is discussed. Harding would repay 1500 dollars of the 2300 dollar claim if the case is dropped.
In Indianapolis October 10 the municipal election result is in doubt at a late hour. The Sentinel Democratic claims re election of Mayor Taggart while the Journal Republican concedes Taggart’s election and claims the rest of the ticket.
Leesburg Alabama October 10 Special James Murphy of Bail Play was bitten by a mad dog yesterday. A madstone was applied and adhered for thirty six hours but did no good. Murphy is in critical condition and not expected to survive. He has hydrophobia symptoms cannot bear water and experiences violent convulsions requiring several men to restrain him.
The U S minister to Venezuela reports peace talks between the government and insurgents have failed after five days. Negotiations suspended today. Venezuelan forces will be advanced and a decisive battle is expected within the week. Puerto Cabello remains quiet.
The preliminary hearing in the Neumeister-Nye case opened in Tavares Florida. Judge Beggs represented the state, Major St Clair Abrams defended the accused, and only two witnesses were examined. Proceedings were calm though lively between Abrams and Beggs as the defense plans to block the reading of letters said to exist in the sheriff s possession from Nye to Mrs Neumeister.
A new four page paper, the Huntsville Evening Post, appeared in Huntsville Alabama on October 10. It lists Ben P. Hunt as editor George C Patterson as city editor and Bruce Armstrong as business manager. The edition declares a Democratic editorial stance and carries an inaugural slate of local content.
Glencoe Alabama October 10 Postoffice Inspector Rosson arrested T Metton assistant postmaster on charge of embezzling money order funds.
Atlanta city leaders approve a preliminary $1,000 expense fund and form a 30 member Arrangements Committee to organize an elaborate reception for Admiral Dewey and Lieutenant Brumby. Mayor Woodward will appoint most members, with key figures from the Chamber of Commerce and Business Men's League included.
