Washington dispatch reports Northwest Republicans grow doubtful of McKinley leadership as administration couriers bring discouraging sentiment on Philippine policy. The trip aims to revive interest, with Dewey support fading and questions about drawing public opinion.
President McKinley unveiled a monument in Peoria to Civil War soldiers during a western tour stop. Commander Rodgers of the Nashville begins voyage to Manila after orders from the navy department. He has already sailed for San Juan Porto Rico to replenish coal and will proceed via Suez, with an estimated seven weeks to two months at sea.
Washington officials notify General Otis and Admiral Watson in Manila by cable that the navy will reinforce the Philippines with the Brooklyn Nashville New Orleans and Badger and soon more gunboats. The move aims to crush the insurgency by cutting off supplies while Dewey stresses closing ports to straiten enemy lines and hasten a collapse.

James J Evans and his sixteen year old daughter were struck by a yard locomotive of the Southern Florida and Western railroad while returning from a prayer meeting in Lakeland. Evans was cut in two and the daughter died from severe injuries suffered earlier, with both fatalities registered in Jacksonville.
Havana October 6 The mayor Senor Perfecto Lacoste issued a city order banning Spanish flags except at the Spanish consulate. The move is expected to trigger significant hostile criticism amid tense relations.
