The annual Post Office figures show 5,088 offices opened this year, 1,500 closed, and a net decrease of 160 from the prior year, with 14,075 appointments wartime and major growth in certain states. Odd scene as two elephants in winter quarters were cremated after burning. Workers opened the remains and recovered a carved Chinese ivory tusk from the stomach, amid reports of ancient relics and religious ceremonies surrounding the creature. The incident followed a Rochester museum guard seeking the stomach and recovering pennies and other curios.
Delegates from British Parliament and eminent Americans urged settlement of disputes with Erie by arbitration. Reported today in Fort Surry Arkansas a deputy marshal and a second man engaged a horse thief and whisky peddler named Smith. Smith rushed out and fired, wounding Dalton. Cole shot Smith dead, but was then shot by Dixon, who with his wife and child emerged from the tent. Dixon was later shot by Lowry, and Dalton was killed while pleading for mercy. Dixon was captured. The injured suffered broken limbs. several men lost property valued at about $100,000. Losses reported to Grand Rapids Mi. include furniture vanishing and a large amount of goods stolen.
Charles A. Kebler, a skilled forger and lawyer, forged names on fake mortgage deeds to siphon funds for speculation. Facing exposure, he killed himself with cyanide in his Mount Auburn home, leaving a brief note “The time has come.” His crimes touched many estates, with losses exceeding $160,000 and multiple victims including family and clients.
A Virginia Island era report from November 27 details a will contest by Mrs Eyeline Vernon Smith of Woodstock against ex congressman Hezekiah Smith. She claims legal marriage and three children, alleging a prior wife’s knowledge of his existing marriage. Eaton A Smith of Barbados Grove funds the challenge, citing his mother’s claim and the need to protect her name and children.
November 21 in Tiarenrex reports police clashed with a crowd during a demonstration to honor a statue and leaders. Police used batons and bayonets amid stone throwing. several hurt. Troops occupied streets. many civilians and constables injured and hospitalised.
