Army and Navy rushed to Egypt to press demands for indemnity as the deadline neared. Evacuation of Sudan by Egyptian troops was only just begun, with concessions possible amid the tense standoff.
The Egyptian chamber of deputies decided to protest the British ultimatum following the Sir Lee Stack assassination to all nations and to the League of Nations. The Daily Express warns that submitting the issue would destroy the Geneva body and stresses that Egypt resists outside interference, noting the matter concerns Great Britain alone.
Charles M. Icann reports Britain steps up measures after Egypt pays 2.5 million to Lord Allenby. Warships head to Alexandria and Port Said while Caradoc and two destroyers sail toward Suez. East Lancashire Regiment and other brigades prepare to deploy to Egypt as Egypt evacuates Sudan. Continued on Page 7, Column 2.
In Mineral Wells Texas on November 24 a stunt plane drew crowds as four bandits robbed the Loving State Bank and fled. The piloted plane vanished into the sky while townsfolk watched aerial tricks unfold aloft. Authorities seek suspects and vehicle details.
Washington November 24 The director of finance of the Democratic National Committee reveals a debt of 300000 after plans to raise 1500000 failed. Spending reached about 1100000 with 800000 raised leaving a 300000 deficit. The appeal targets three groups and stresses party machinery and control as the price of paying the bill.
James S. Draper, 35, of 124 East Twelfth Street, was struck by a car driven by a friend while waiting for another vehicle near 102 West Mitchell Street. He was rushed to Grady Hospital in a dying condition from brain concussion. the hit-and-run driver is being sought. Draper’s friend EB A Murphy transported him to the hospital. wagon driver Will Gleaton also received treatment for injuries. Officers Goode and Bullard investigated.
Atlanta board president John T Hancock asks Attorney General Napier for guidance on constitutional sections affecting a proposed merger of city and Fulton county school systems into a metropolitan district. The plan, supported by the board, envisions a seven member elected school board and district control of operations and financing. A committee will study advisability and report possible recommendations.
A classified ad in The Atlanta Constitution listing a suite of rooms drew a flood of inquiries in a single Sunday. Miss Agnes Rowe of 400 West Peachtree Street reported receiving many calls and renting her rooms. The ad urged renters to stay near the phone awaiting prospects. J B Ellington of Macon underwent Grady Hospital surgery after four years with a pistol bullet and two keys lodged in his right leg. An initial discharge left the wound, and X rays followed by an operation finally removed the corroded eye and bullet, ending a long medical ordeal and as promised restoring the patient’s health.
Columbus Ohio November 24 Evidence indicates Addie Shearsley was murdered and cremated in the Christ Evangelical Lutheran church parsonage furnace. Officials uncovered remains in an upstairs closet during a two minute house search. County Prosecutor John R. King announced the discovery amid bloodstain tests on a table cover. A 12 year old girl Lilly Mae Nicholson suffered severe burns while smothering flames from a grate fire to save her 3 year old brother Freddy. Both children were rushed to Grady hospital where Freddy died several hours later. The girl’s injuries include burns to hands and body but her condition is described as not serious. Survivors include parents Mr. and Mrs. H J Nicholson and two other sisters.
Dr Karl Arnstein designer of the ZR2 arrives in New York with 12 engineers aboard the George Washington to begin construction in Akron Ohio for a Goodyear Zeppelin fleet. He envisions America becoming the world center of dirigible manufacture with fleets of helium filled airships for passenger and mail service.
North Georgia Methodist appointments shift many pastors after the conference session. Rev W L Pierce becomes presiding elder of the north Atlanta district as Rev W L Pierce is noted to move St. John Augusta. Reassignments include transitions for elders across Atlanta LaGrange Augusta Rome and Gainesville districts with J G Logan J S Jenkins and others taking new posts. Final session highlighted by Bishop Darlington.
An unmasked bandit robbed H E Williamson, manager of the Standard Oil station at 514 Penches Street, taking $40. He locked Williamson in an anteroom, then escaped as Williamson fled through a window after the thief demanded water. Police M D Cartwright and M D Johnson filed the report. Williamson was reading when the man entered and produced a pistol. The robber rifled the cash register before fleeing.
Washington dispatch reports Charles Curtis of Kansas elected majority leader in the Senate by the Republican caucus, completing western control of both houses. Warren and Wadsworth withdrew, Curtis rose from jockey to senator, succeeding Henry Cabot Lodge. Butler's opposition stalled a vice presidential bid.
New Henry Grady will throw open its doors at eight tonight with a reception and dinner dance. The Georgia governors once resided on Peachtree Street and the public will be invited to inspect the thirteen floor tower and sub basement mechanical areas during the evening.
Fair and slightly colder conditions expected. Forecast covers Tuesday and Wednesday with mostly fair skies and no significant rainfall noted. Temperatures range from a high to a low near typical normals, with humidity modest and dry bulb readings around mid forties.
Fulton county grand jury returned 29 indictments against 44 Atlanta brokers for violating Georgia rules on cotton futures margins. A no bill went against Atlanta Commercial Exchange. Solicitor Boykin vowed a broad probe, aiming to reach out-of-town brokers and pursue more arrests. Louis Brooks, NY exchange figure, indicted for maintaining an Atlanta booth and handling margins. Brooks未 arrested. may return voluntarily. New Orleans and New York brokers with agencies in Atlanta named in indictments.
