Threats to move Vanderbilt if Supreme Court rules against church
Elberton Ga November 26 1913 Threats were voiced that Vanderbilt University and related church properties would be moved to Atlanta if the Supreme Court adverse to church ownership. Dr HL Hamill Nashville stated at the Sunday school board anniversary that the Southern Methodist church would relocate the university and publishing house to Atlanta if the ruling favored the conference. The opening session of the Georgia annual conference of the Methodist church featured reports from presiding elders and a push for reform including limiting presiding elder terms and expanding lay work for women. The gathering honored deceased ministers and heard progress reports from districts including Atlanta Augusta and Gainesville. Bishop Denny welcomed attendees and requested a cultured ministry as debates over lay rights and elder tenure began to unfold.
