In Columbus North Carolina on November 19 a fire destroyed the Clay county poorhouse. Four of five inmates perished in the blaze while the fire department fought the flames amid the destruction. Local authorities began investigations into the incident and the cause of the fire remained under inquiry.
In a forthcoming editorial Hearst denounces the Cuban reciprocity measure as a trust-backed scheme. He argues tariffs must fall for protections that hurt consumers, oppose industry monopolies, and oppose sham reciprocity that strengthens trust control over the nation’s tariff policy.
Pastor Rev Felex M Repore and an Italian named Joesoricy were fatally wounded during a card game in the priest’s apartments at Mount Carmel Catholic church in Deniver. Repore was shot twice in the abdomen and once in the face, Joesoricy once in the abdomen. No witnesses, all near are Italians and hostile to the shooting. They were taken to St Josephs hospital where recovery is not expected. No statement secured from the men.
Charleston news reports Farmers and Merchants Bank of Camden, SC is under assignees after a troubled period traced to imprudent loans. Directors and accountants reviewed records and found assets sufficient to meet obligations, but due to a death of the president and cashier and lack of a willing successor, the board assigned all property to E. Vaux and A D Kennedy for management.
New York November reports that Seaboard Air Line will remain independent while arranging a funding syndicate led by Hilair & Co Thomas F Ryan and T Jefferson Coolidge Jr to loan the carrier the needed funds to pay off floating debt and complete the Birmingham Atlanta extension A large board of directors from Boston New York Baltimore Chicago and St Louis is elected and Warfield president of Continental Trust Co explains the deal aims to strengthen Seaboard with financial support and strong management Also noted is the death of Charles Dearing a Chattanooga youth struck by a trolley car at Market Street crossing.
The Hay-Bunau-Varilla Isthmian Canal treaty was signed this evening at Secretary Hay's residence by Hay and Phillippe Bunau-Varilla minister from Panama. The Panama commission arrived from New York and ratification may come within forty eight hours. The treaty grants the United States absolute sovereignty over the canal strip and aligns with the Spooner Act requirements.

Charlotte, Nov 16 Special J P Caldwell Jr nine year old son of J P Caldwell editor of Charlotte Observer killed himself at 6 pm by shooting through the heart with a revolver. For weeks he suffered depression and had hinted at self harm though relatives hoped despondency caused the act. He spoke with a friend, returned home, entered his room, and fired. A sister found him dead on his bed with the pistol at his left breast. He had served two years in the United States navy and had recently suffered more illness and melancholy.
Former President Grover Cleveland, in Princess Anne County at Back Bay Gun Club, has so far failed to bag enough game to send his wife a box on homecoming. The party plans two more days of hunting at Breck Bay before returning Saturday, and faces a ten dollar non resident license fine for violating Virginia's game law.
The steamship Itasca from Baltimore ran onto the jetties near Fort Jackson at Savannah early today. Captain Pratt, recently promoted, commanded the vessel in its first trip and with few passengers aboard. Efforts to dislodge her continued all day. cargo was partially removed and another attempt was planned at high tide. No major damage reported yet, though leaks may appear after freeing.
