Dr James McFadden Gaston Sr a leading Atlanta physician and pioneer surgeon died yesterday at his home 421 Gaphol avenue after years of illness He practiced in Atlanta since 1883 and earlier in Brazil He leaves wife ten children and many grandchildren Funeral services will be at 2530 oclock at the residence and interment will be in West view cemetery He was born December 27 1824 in South Carolina and held prominent roles in the medical field including surgery professor in Southern Medical College and multiple national medical associations He served in the Civil War and later resumed practice first in Chester South Carolina then in Brazil before settling in Atlanta
In St Joseph Iowa or Missouri two wealthy young businessmen Irving McDonnell and J F Purlong were at a cafe after a theater performance when a dispute led Purlong to shoot McDonald in what he claims was self defense after being assaulted by four men. Mrs Lester Mytick and Grace Hol from The Governor's Son company were present with friends. Police say the incident occurred after 5 pm as they left Edmen Street cafe and voices were exchanged before the fatal shot. The women remain as witnesses for an investigation.
Wharleston, S.C. November 16. Fire tore through the engine room of the Burton Lumber Company planing mill on Cape River seven miles from the city. The blaze destroyed the mill engine room drying shed and dry kilns, burned seven bars of lumber and 860000 feet of lumber stock. Loss estimated between 50000 and 75000 dollars, fully covered by insurance. Marines assisted in fighting the blaze and the flames were brought under control by dawn. The fire threatened broader damage and potential layoffs for hundreds of workers if it had spread.
Fall River Mass November 5. Textile workers seek a conference with cotton mill manufacturers over plans to revert to the pre March 17 1902 wage schedule on November 23. The executive committee of the manufacturers association is being asked to consider a retrenchment plan less burdensome than a 10 percent wage cut. If no compromise is reached, strikes are possible but leaders aim to make the best of the situation. A servant entered after a long wait. his mother and aunt were home and nearly overcome by the fumes. DuPree had served the post office ten years. Senator Bate planned to come home from Washington at once.
