Mass Meeting Chooses County Democratic Executive Committee

A county mass meeting led by McCullough elected a two year county executive committee with McCullough as chairman and Callwen as secretary. The assembly selected a large slate of ward and district representatives and set a second meeting presided by R E Campbell for further nominations and a secretary.

Oliver Wins First Round Nomination Report Favorable

Case of Wood Washington November 12 reports Hebert Shaw Oliver the NY nomination for assistant secretary of war would be favorably reported by the Senate committee on military affairs today. No action on Brigadier General Leonard Wood’s major general status was taken, while Teller urged inquiries into General Wood’s military rewards. Proctor, acting chairman, called for another committee meeting within days to extend hearings to all opponents of Wood’s nomination.

Cotton cultivation urged in Jamaica by imperial commissioner

Sir Darla Morris, imperial agricultural commissioner to the West Indies, told a Jamaica gathering that many districts are suitable for cotton. He urged establishing an extensive industry there, saying planters will likely follow his advice amid a broader British West Indies push to supply cotton to manufacturers and reduce dependence on foreign sources.

War ship fired on Clyde liner Cherokee

The Clyde line steamer Cherokee arrived from Santo Domingo amid reports of encounters with Dominican war ships. Shots were fired across her bows on two occasions as the Cherokee was stopped and searched at Porto Plata and Macoris between October 27 and November 3. After parley she was allowed to proceed with cargo and mails. the vessel later faced further orders and clearance disputes with Dominican authorities, landing nineteen cabin passengers who faced refusals abroad.

Atlanta Leads Fifty Largest U S Cities in October Postal Receipts

Atlanta posted the highest year over year increase among the fifty largest U S post offices for October 1903 with receipts of 50 506 47 up 9 582 71 from October 1902 The Washington report shows Atlanta ahead of Lowell Mass Seattle Los Angeles and others with gains ranging from about 9 to 23.4 percent while New York and Philadelphia show modest gains or declines This reflects broad growth in Atlanta's postal business and local commerce amid requests for a new post office building.

Heroic Curtin Saves Vessel at Norfolk

Lieutenant Roland J. Curtin and several seamen on torpedo boat destroyer Lawrence rescued the ship from a forward compartment fire that threatened the magazine. Curtin repeatedly entered the blaze with crew members overcome by smoke, rescuing a man and sustaining only slight injuries while the Lawrence suffered minor damage.
