Washington November 9 a committee of tobacco manufacturers heard before the ways and means subcommittee on internal revenue to protest any per case tax increase on manufactured tobacco Spence of Cincinnati spoke for eighty leading firms arguing higher taxes would reduce demand harming manufacturers and growers. They favor repealing the 1890 law to boost government revenue.
Washington reports cash in the treasury is low and only the silver bullion coinage ordered under the Sherman act remains to be issued. Officials say preparations are ongoing to strike ingots and blanks, with new methods being devised to replenish the reserve as available coinage is awaited.

Smith dies in Knoxville following a gunshot linked to a failed express car robbery on the Knoxville and Ohio road. A coroner s jury found the death from a pistol wound inflicted by Barney Irwin. Irwin posted 16000 bond for a preliminary hearing next Monday amid murder in the first degree charge.
