Norfolk Nov 1 The Bayling steamer Gaston sighted a drifting sloop off Tangier Island in Chesapeake Bay Tuesday morning. John Petti grew, a young man from the city, was found asleep aboard after overhauling. The sloop Lloyd Hudgin was turned adrift and ran aground following a broken anchor chain.
Dispatches from Ladysmith report the garrison in good spirits and confident as Boers shelled the town on Monday night. British guns from the Powerful opened fire at dawn Tuesday, Boers replied with more batteries some silenced. heavy Boer losses claimed. The artillery duel continued Tuesday night.

Forlaw's warehouse wrecked, TD 8 Sanders damaged, Carrie A Lane towed north presumed wrecked. Widespread fear of greater loss from Virginia to Florida.
In Wilmington area reports a Tuesday storm wrecked two schooners, Stonewall and Stella Lee, both bound for Shallotte with cargoes. crews presumed lost. The government tug Woodward and small launch were swept from moorings and sunk, while the Norwegian bark Johannes broke from moorings but was refloated by tugs.
W J Bryan spoke in Ravenna after a 22 mile drive from Loup City in three horse relays. Carriage upset five miles from start. occupants bruised but not seriously. He spoke in a lumber yard for an hour as the temperature stood 12 degrees above zero. Snow falls in Springfield and tomato crop is ruined. Judge Long named consul general at Cairo, Egypt. Czar and czarina expected privately at Potsdam.
Mrs Ida M Bruce widow of Rufus Bruce, long-time Atlanta native, shot herself at home shortly after 9 pm following alleged slander by sisters-in-law Rose Bruce and Cora Carnell. She left a note for clergy and named pallbearers and an administrator for her estate. Three children survive.
Excitement over the Monday night lynching of Wells a Black miner in Weir City Kansas remains high. White miners rally while special deputies patrol the streets fearing a possible outbreak. Mines idle and nearby Chicopee and Frontenac miners standby in readiness.
A six story building at 129 West Lake Street collapsed this evening in Chicago. Three men died: Joseph B. Doctor, Franklin B. Hanson, Henry Hilton. Missing: Charles Mullens, an unidentified woman, C Williams. Injured include Patrick Peyton, W B Adams, Charles Henning, A J Kelly, T Taylor. Property damage reported around $200,000 with up to forty houses affected.
London reports at Aldershot that a complete army division of 10,000 men and forty four guns will be formed for service in South Africa. This may be a preliminary step toward calling out a second army corps for Transvaal duty.
