Northeastern railroad sold to Southern Railway in 1899

Governor Candler announces the Northeastern railroad sale to the Southern Railway Company for 307000 after bids exceed the upset price. James W. English of Atlanta’s Fourth National Bank and A H Hodgson of Athens were bidders. first payments of 9000 and 15000 were posted. The line from Athens to Tula, about forty miles, passes to Southern with total state recovery near 387000 and a reported profit of 20000.
