Americus Times-Reformer reports Judge Crisp clarifying his long held stance in favor of free unlimited coinage of silver at 16 to 1. He says he supports silver independent of gold standard and reasserts his views amid pressure from opponents.
The passage notes Repffield Pope's marriage linked to Texas Democratic events as Dallas hosts discussions on state convention timing. A motion to hold primaries before the convention is discussed, with committees adjourned after proposing solutions to align with party rules and preserve fair contest within the party.
Arrangements for the Silver Convention at Des Moines include delegations from Silver Glabs of Slow Gre y Stuart Dubuque County Blaite Marshalltown and other places. Afternoon meetings at the Young Men's Christian Association auditorium followed by an evening address by Senator Tellie of Colorado at the opera house. General Warner of Ohio and Joseph C Sibles of Pennsylvania among attending leaders.

A Kansas report notes an upcoming meeting of the state Democratic Central Committee in Topeka to set policy favoring free coinage and to plan a response to the Supreme Court’s income tax ruling. Washington May 2 Walter Quinton Gresham will receive a soldier burial with military honors. The funeral will be held in the White House east room and the casket draped in flags. Secretary Lamont and others arrange the service as cabinet and diplomatic corps attend. The procession to the Baltimore and Ohio depot will include troops from Fort Myer and Washington barracks, and the president and cabinet will travel to Chicago for the interment.
Nashville May 28 Special J Poth house adjourned in respect to the state. Senate amendments referred to penitentiary committee propose a state board of public works with 1400 survey expenditures from a joint in West Tennessee on the Tennessee river to Mississippi river, plus use of concrete in bolders on canal. A resolution states no member should be appointed to tax terms or state board of equalization. A penitentiary committee is to hear evidence from the cent divestation. A levee plan is proposed for west Tennessee counties. House declined to recess for Gallatin grave decorations.
A strong quake was felt in Brattleboro at about 11 15 this afternoon. The shock, starting in the east and lasting 16 to 12 seconds, was accompanied by heavy rumbling. Residents rushed from homes in fright as tremors were reported in several village areas and surrounding countryside.
A coastal disaster near Vigo Spain reports the Dom Pedro sinking after collision with Bajes Corrobedo at 6 pm. Many passengers and crew saved, about eighty lost. Other items include election woes in Rome and a wedding novelty fee in Knonville. Mobile opens a marine railway for ships up to 1560 tons.
At Zanesville Ohio May 28 the Ohio Republican state convention chose Bushnell as its gubernatorial candidate after a long ballot that featured Foraker and Sherman, with McKinley praised and a platform endorsing protective tariffs and bimetalism. The event drew about five thousand attendees and saw extensive crowd enthusiasm and procedural emphasis on a final vote.
Nashville May 28 special John C Burch and James E Allison today bought a controlling interest in The Nashville American from James M Head and took charge. The paper will stay democratic with policy changes on finance switching from free coinage of silver to the single gold standard.
Reports from Huntington West Virginia dated May 23 say several mines reopened today on the Norfolk and Western system with more to follow in coming days. Workers appeared eager to return in some sites while strike zones were temporarily filled elsewhere. No trouble reported.
Philadelphia May 28 mudgets alias Holmes pleaded guilty in quarter sessions court to conspiring to defraud Fidelity Mutual Life Association of Philadelphia of 10000 by a corpse fraud. Mudgets withdrew not guilty plea after defense and prosecution consultations. sentence deferred. Jeptha P Howe and Marion Hedgepeth were also indicted on the same charge.
In New Orleans J J Davis is found guilty of killing George Boya on Canal Street. Davis, once a court crier, and Boya, a deputy sheriff, were linked to stealing the jury list. The jury verdict declares murder without mitigating circumstances and sentences Davis to life imprisonment.
Lafayette Prince was hanged this morning in the Ohio state penitentiary annex in Columbus. The trap was sprung at 1:00 and fourteen and a half minutes later the victim died as a result of a broken neck. He made no statement, replying that he had nothing to say when questioned. He murdered his wife.
In Winston NC yesterday near Cana Davie county Richard Smoot and spouse quarreled. While he beat her, she grabbed his lower lip and bit it off. He walked four miles to a physician to have it sewed back. Also local notices report jockey Griffin killed at Clyde Park track in Boston.
Yokohama special dispatch reports Japanese merchants imitating English and American goods, selling at home with foreign labels as England and the West face shifts between gold and silver standards. The piece argues Japan will expand manufacturing, challenge Western industry, and claim world trade via Nippon Yusen Kaisha and a growing fleet as silver remains valued against gold.
