A somber crowd in New Orleans honors Jefferson Davis with Governor Foster and state officials present. The body lies in state as ceremonies unfold with veteran guards, flowers from across the South, and a funeral train bound for Richmond via Montgomery, carrying Davis to final rest amid confederate memory and national reflection.
Montgomery Alabama May 28 report on preparations for the Jefferson Davis funeral events. A parade from the depot to the capitol will feature three Birmingham companies and aCadets from Auburn. The statehouse hosts wreaths flowers and cedar inscriptions while Governor Jones escorts the body to the Georgia line aboard a private car provided by the railroad.
The ex president Jefferson Davis body arrives in Atlanta this afternoon at four with a large civic and military escort. The casket will lie in state at the capitol rotunda for three and a half hours with a guard of honor while crowds pay respects to the Confederate leader. Winnie Davis accompanies the body. Knights of Pythias escort the procession and a Stocked Arm representation is planned.
In Milner Georgia evangelist William Graham and his wife were killed by the Nancy Hanks while walking beside the rails after church. Conductor Cubbage and engineer were questioned but no blame found. The couple, known as Uncle Billy and Mrs Graham, were beloved church figures with a large family and long years of service. Funeral plans and an inquest will follow, with strong public interest in the railroad accident tale.
Chicago May 28 crowds at the world’s fair heard elevating music by Heisand and others as hundreds of thousands viewed Canada’s flag and unfinished federal buildings. Many structures remained closed for Sabbath observance, while saloons and downtown bars were desolate and guards protected the halted exhibits and the model battleship. In Huntington Indiana a 75 year old man, eccentric and armed, killed his wife and set their home ablaze before apparently taking his own life, with about $200 found and more money missing.
